Four bank failures bring year's tally to 21

Four bank failures brought the number of U.S. failures to 21 this year, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. said Friday. The two largest were Plantation Federal Bank of Pawleys Island, S.C., and Inter Savings Bank of Maple Grove, Minn., each with nearly $500 million in deposits. First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Charleston, S.C., will assume the deposits of Plantation Federal Bank, and Great Southern Bank of Reeds Spring, Mo., will assume the deposits of Inter Savings. HarVest Bank of Maryland in Gaithersburg will have its $145.5 million in deposits assumed by Sonabank of McLean, Va.

3. In fact, the number of failures is getting better

Here is how they break down to this point for the previous 3 years: 2011 - 34, 2010 - 57, 2009 - 29
