Judge Says Vermont Law on Genetically Modified Food Stands

Source: Associated Press

A Vermont law that could make the state the first in the country to require labeling of genetically modified food has been allowed by a federal judge to stand for now despite opposition by food industry groups.

U.S. District Court Judge Christina Reiss in Burlington on Monday ruled against the Grocery Manufacturers' Association and other industry groups in their request for a preliminary order to block the law from going into effect as scheduled on July 1, 2016.
...
"The safety of food products, the protection of the environment, and the accommodation of religious beliefs and practices are all quintessential governmental interests, as is the State's desire 'to promote informed consumer decision-making,'" she wrote, quoting from the state's court filings.

The court dismissed the industry groups' request that it apply a legal standard of strict scrutiny to the free-speech issues in the case, making it easier at trial for the state to rebut the companies' First Amendment claims. It also dismissed the plaintiffs' request that the law be found to violate the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

Big victory at this stage! Congratulations Vermont and all who worked on getting this needed law passed!

Law goes into effect July 1, 2016 and will trigger some already approved laws in other states. Next step: GMO goes on trial as the Snack Food Industry continues to try and deny consumers' choice.

If The gmo corps are so proud of their product why do they fight labeling?

2 other states have laws that will be triggered by Vermont's

http://www.righttoknow-gmo.org/states

Maine has a law that will be triggered by VT's:

(Jan 2014) Maine will become the second state to require labels on food that contains genetically modified ingredients under new legislation signed by Gov. Paul LePage (R) this week — but only after other states follow suit.

LePage signed the legislation,...over the objections of agriculture giants who produce many of the raw ingredients that go into everyday foods.

"scientifically ignorant GMOphobes."

Do you know that the cancers from Agent Orange didn't start showing up for 15 years?

Do you know that there has been NO long term testing of GMOs?
...you just accept on the faith of our Politicians that GMOs are safe?

You do know that GMOs were approved by POLITICIANS who "grand fathered in" GMOs without testing?

You can do what you want,
but in 2006 My Wife & I moved to the woods surrounded by National Forest & Wilderness.
There are no Ag Businesses within 100 miles.
ALL GMO crops are forever banned from our little hill top,
as well as non-naturally occurring herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers.

So far, so good.
Our Non-GMO Asparagus has been coming in for the last week,
and we are in food orgy mode. Our Non-GMO Strawberries are next,
with just a few little tasty red ones tonight. We will be inundated by Wednesday.

Monsanto and the pack of liars on their payroll can go fuck themselves.

GMO crops are designed to be sprayed with Round Up and they are, lots of it. The consumer wants healthier, fresher food. GMO allows longer shelf life, cutting without browning and other cosmetic nonsense.

Round Up found in human breast milk:

Can't you see why people want to make an informed choice?
