Rouhani Dismisses White House Compromise With Congress on Iran Nuclear Deal

Last edited Wed Apr 15, 2015, 04:10 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: NY Times

TEHRAN — Iran’s president on Wednesday dismissed the compromise worked out between the Obama administration and Congress over an impending nuclear agreement as internal American politics, saying the Iranians were negotiating with six countries, not just the United States.

The president, Hassan Rouhani, also reiterated Iran’s position that onerous economic sanctions that have been imposed on the country for years by the United Nations, United States and European Union must be lifted with the signing of any final agreement.

The remarks by Mr. Rouhani, a prime architect of a framework nuclear agreement reached April 2 with the so-called P5-plus-1 group of powers, amounted to the first official Iranian reaction to a compromise reached on Tuesday between the White House and the Senate over the nuclear negotiations.

In what was seen by some as a setback for the White House, the compromise, in the form of a Senate bill, would give lawmakers a greater say in the terms of a final deal, which negotiators of Iran and the P5-plus-1 group — Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States — are working to complete by June 30.

I declare here that whatever the U.S. Senate says and what the House of Representatives and radicals in America are after, what the mercenaries in the region say, is not related to our nation and the government,” Mr. Rouhani said during a speech in northern Iran reported by state media.

“We request cooperation for cooperation, good will for good will, respect for respect,” Mr. Rouhani said. “We declare to you that we are not negotiating with the U.S. Senate or the House of Representatives. The party we are negotiating with is called the P5-plus-1 group.”

1. So who's lying about when sanctions are lifted?

3. That's a darn good question, since AIPAC/GOP won't want them lifted anytime soon...

5. Neither has to be lying - the words were when the deal was IMPLEMENTED

There are major steps involved in implementing it. The US saying it is step wise is saying that as pieces are implemented - more goes away. Rouhani is arguing that signing is implementing. Note that the US comments on the interim deal were closer to the actual interim agreement than Iran's.

Expect BOTH sides to spin until the final agreement is signed. Why? There are still things that need finalizing. If either side said EXACTLY where they expect to end up, the deal would move towards the other.

7. Right. It could be that this deal will proceed, and this domestic posturing will mollify the right

I was very depressed about it yesterday, but noted that it may be that Obama got what he needed fixed and this represents a face saving way out for the Republicans. If a deal takes place - even if were exactly as Obama and Kerry described, they will claim they made it better. (Possibly AIPAC too)

If that happens, the important thing will be -- it worked out.

Fingers crossed.

Even if we wind up with the exact same deal, the GOPpers and A-Pickers can all claim they "made it better" with their huffing and puffing...

10. "Outcome" is not an outcome until there is one. And Obama is not being "played the fool"! Really?

The Bill as known on Monday is NOT, repeat NOT, the same Bill as passed 18 to 0 in Committee, silly media!

They changed some "words" and added some other "words" and now there is a fresh, new Bill with some of these new words that satisfy all sides.

Obama can lift sanctions, there are many, by EO as he imposed them, and Congress can lift sanctions as they imposed them, Congress has 30 days, not 60 to have a final vote by majority on lifting sanctions AFTER the penned final peace deal...and the Rest of the World including all the other negotiating partners can lift sanctions as they please.

At the very least he doesn't understand who Obama is. That list has no basis in fact.

The Republicans are jabbering about how "the American people" need to be heard in this process. Well, I think when we the people elected Barack Obama, we were heard.

They will not give 'this' president anything. It is disgusting.
