Pennsylvania Primary: Blue Dog Democrats Lose Seats
Source: huffingtonpost
WASHINGTON -- It was a not-so-super Tuesday for Pennsylvania's Blue Dog Democrats. Reps. Tim Holden (D-Pa.) and Jason Altmire (D-Pa.), both members of the dwindling conservative Democratic coalition, lost their primary races on Tuesday. Before the defeat of the two incumbents, there were just 25 Blue Dogs left in Congress, after the coalition's members were wiped out in the 2010 election. Holden lost to progressive candidate Matt Cartwright, an attorney who attacked the incumbent for voting against President Barack Obama's health care reform. Holden is the second House member to lose to a newcomer in the 2012 primaries. The other lawmaker was Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-Ohio). Both were also targeted by the anti-incumbent super PAC, the Campaign for Primary Accountability. Getting a progressive Democrat into Pennsylvania's newly redrawn 17th Congressional District was a priority for progressive groups, including MoveOn and the League of Conservation Voters. The latter ran the largest independent expenditure campaign in the race, which included a $230,000 TV ad buy on broadcast and cable networks in the Scranton media market. The spot criticized Holden for opposing Obama's clean energy plan. Read more: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/24/pennsylvania-primary-blue-dog-democrats_n_1450926.html Whooot

5. So two r-lite blue dogs are replaced with two progressive D's? What's not to love about that? : )
|
One is progressive, the other has heavy union support. Sweet!

7. Critz is hardly a DU Progressive
|
He's against environmental protections. He's pro Marsellas Shale natural gas development. He's stridently pro life. He's pro war. He was against the repeal of don't ask don't tell. These are all things that he's more to the right of Altmire on. Nevertheless, Critz and Altmire are substantially similar. If you hate one you probably hate the other.
Also this district was a merge between two D held districts. Both Critz and Altmire are currently Representatives. |

13. There's really no way around that, given the district
|
It's the rural outskirts of pittsburgh. I'm not at all convinced that any other type of dem can win in the area.
There is a positive way to look at this though. Since PA is losing a representative and that representative is a D, due to R control of the redistricting, it's good that it was one of these two. |

24. That's true all around. I unfortunately LIVE are the area you are calling rural outskirts of Pittsb
|
urgh. Funny how my area gets lumpped into that grouping.
What amazes me about the area is that I know 3 interracial couples and the white partners all hate Obama and wouldn't trust him because he's a "Muslim" I want to move so badly just can't afford to right now. |

8. It's great -- assuming the progressives can beat the Republicans in those districts
|
Nominating a progressive who can win is awesome. Replacing a blue dog with a progressive who can't win is stupid. Fortunately both of these are somewhat more liberal districts than last time around.

A blue dog is something you bring out to a parade or a cheap circus.

11. No one has yet answered the question: Can they beat the Republicans? Their districts were redrawn to
|
give Republicans the advantage. All of this celebration is moot unless they can beat the Republicans.

14. The districts themselves are a bit more Democratic than they were 2 years ago
|
The advantage to the Republicans is that there are fewer D districts; the districts that do remain are more solidly Democratic. Same thing as in Ohio -- Kucinich's district is even more Democratic than it was before, but it put him head to head with another D Representative.

15. Yes, Critz can beat a Republican
|
Since he's currently a sitting Congressman. This was a district merge, like the kucinich/kaptur OH merge. Unlike that merge, nobody's crying over the loss of one of these guys.

So if you want progressive policy to have a voice in Congress, this is how you go about it.

18. Are you kidding me? This is something that I've been screaming about for years!!
|
All this blaming Obama for not "passing" liberal/progressive policies. I and many others here on DU have been spitting out a spleen trying to get people to understand that we must have MORE progressives in Congress if we want more progressive/liberal policy outcomes. So, you don't need to preach to me. I was only asking if it is possible for these progressive candidates to beat the Republicans that they will face in November. I am thrilled that Democrats went out and defeated at least one (not Critz) Blue Dog.

|
only to see assholes like the Blue Dogs take it over and then ruin what we have gained? Progressives propelled Obama to victory in 2008. Blue Dogs led them to a disaster in 2010.
Fuck the Blue Dogs and fuck "conservative Dems." Good riddance to bad rubbish. |
