Veteran Survives 3 Tours Of Duty But He’s Gunned Down In Lancaster [CA]

Source: CBS News

LANCASTER (CBS) — A 30-year-old veteran who served three tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan was shot to death Saturday in Lancaster, sheriff’s officials said.

Nathen Taylor’s family is grieving and in disbelief.

The shooting in the 700 block of West Avenue H-7 occurred around 12:10 a.m., said Deputy Guillermina Saldana of the Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau.

Taylor, according to his brother Patrick, had just left a party because he didn’t like to be around a lot of drinking. Taylor called his brother to say he would be dropping by his house within a few minutes.

Taylor was sitting alone in his car, cell phone in hand, when he was shot by an unknown assailant.

1. Damn, that's awful

I wonder if this had anything to do with the party?

2. Maybe, but it's a pretty gangy neighborhood. I know, I live in Lancaster.

5. So you're saying it might have been just random violence?

I was thinking that since the victim had left the party because of "excessive drinking", that meant that someone(s) might have been getting violent, and the victim might have gotten into some sort of scuffle with them.

20. Random violence is rarely really random.

Usually you end up finding out that it was targeted at someone, probably a rival gang member.

4. On the local news, one man who responded after the shots...

...said that if he had known the ambulance would take that long, he would have put Taylor in his car and driven him to the hospital.

Google maps shows Antelope Valley Hospital 2.4 miles (a 7-minute drive) away...

6. comment

I did make a comment recently about this type of crime. was shot down by DU censors.so i'll just say some people need to get their s... together before being outraged with shootings like Martin in Florida. too many guns with easy access to them. 25 dollars to a crackhead, you got a weapon.

8. There are probably just as many Democrats as Republicans who judge their manliness by the size

of their gun. Who knows maybe more Democrats.

26. Guess you could say the same about our shared obsession with sex and sexuality. WTF?

I have a feeling that men who are secure and comfortable with their own sexuality are far less likely to own (or obsess over) guns and to vote Democratic.

9. All guns start out legal.

Guns should be tracked, licensed, and tied to a company or individual from the day they were made.

11. yeah

serial # can be filed off. they need some kind of sensor put in it, so to get to it, it would destroy weapon. It wouldn't do much good now, too many(millions??)on the street. it's hopeless.

12. Seems like stolen cars would be a more pressing issue.

Unfortunately, like serial #'s any sensor can be deactivated.

What we need is a less violent culture in the US.

13. Every gun sale should be recorded. The seller and buyer.

When a gun is used in an illegal act, the seller should be identified.

Straw purchasers and gun shops that deal in 'unusual' volume to single buyers should be identified and stopped.

14. And they are now. Not sure how you want to identify illegal sellers though.

I'd like to track illegal sellers of all items.

24. That guns are not as prolifigate, and more closely regulated, than here?

That Switzerland is an anomaly in Europe? Are you trying to make the point that because the Swiss use their guns primarily for suicide, we can deduce that guns have nothing to do with gun crime in the US?

25. Try again. Guns are in almost every Swiss home yet their gun deaths are a fraction of the US's.

Why?

17. Ya think?

For reasons too deep for my brain, the US is unwilling to correlate our ridiculous gun crime rate with our ridiculous gun access. The NRA is nearly as malignant a force as Hate Radio, though they work together a lot.
