Senate to vote on array of Postal Service overhaul proposals

Source: Washington Post

The U.S. Postal Service would like Congress to allow changes to the mail delivery schedule and other reforms to better control costs, but a set of proposals expected to come to a vote Tuesday could place even more restrictions on when, where and how Americans receive their mail.

The Senate plans to vote on dozens of amendments designed to overhaul the Postal Service, by providing nearly $11 billion to fund the buyouts of hundreds of thousands of employees and, eventually, ending six-day-a-week mail delivery.

The proposals could also establish new service standards and revamp how the USPS sets aside money for its retirees.

Unlike most issues under consideration this year on Capitol Hill, overhauling the Postal Service does not break along traditional partisan or ideological lines. Central to the cost-cutting measures are plans to close hundreds of processing facilities and more than 2,000 post offices, an issue that pits lawmakers from smaller, rural states against colleagues from larger, more urban areas, where the proposed closings would have less of an impact.

How about rolling back that 2006 bill that pre-funded retirees for 75 years? Let's call our Senators and urge them to do that.

2. not one penny of our tax money pays anything to do with the postal service.

this is about destroying the largest union in the united states and giving ups and fed ex the most profitable part of the postal service.

7. mark

exactly. right on the mark. The Postal Service, in spite of being flawed, provides an excellent on time service to millions of people. Leave it alone!!! It is another election year, and I dare say partisan issue. Postal Service retirees earned their retirement in spades. LEAVE IT ALONE!.

3. WRITE YOUR SENATORS!

A sample letter:

I understand the Senate is presently considering taking action to stabilize the U.S. Postal Service with a short-term cash infusion while delaying most decisions on closing post offices and ending Saturday mail delivery.

I expect you recognize the real solution to this problem would be to end the ill-considered PAEA mandate that is killing the USPS. Your support of such action would gain my contuing support.

Yours truly,

6. That darn Constitution requiring the Federal Gov have a postal service.

And not requiring it to be self-sustaining or even profitable. Those blasted founders realized that democracy required widely available communication and a regulated means of commerce.

8. Here are the real people who's KILLING the POST OFFICE

All appointed by GW BUSH. "the board of governors" Congress did not come up with this. This small band of ALEC like appointees did. Only one was appointed by Obama who happens to be a ex- Biden Aid. The Obama administration has known about this since Nancy Polosi took the gavel. They have done nothing and said nothing about this union busting band. Why appoint people who hate the government to run the PO? They are doing exactly what they were appointed to do. PRIVATIZE AND KILL THE POST OFFICE.
Dont tell me they (THE OBAMA ADMIN) didn't know, they had the house and senate.
2006 Democratic Congress Silence in this is in agreement.
