Russia and Egypt signed several agreements to reinforce military and economic ties, along with a deal to help Cairo develop nuclear power capabilities. The agreements capped a two-day visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The audience applauds Putin and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi as they agree to strengthen mutual ties in the face of a growing terrorist threat and outside economic pressures.
At a news conference Tuesday, the two leaders also announced a nuclear deal to help Egypt develop its power capabilities.
Putin said both sides had agreed to intensify cooperation in various areas, including Russian investments in Egypt, tourism, and cooperation in the battle against terrorism.

(24,692 posts)Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has hailed the economic and security relationship between Egypt and Russia, and announced the establishment of a free trade zone between Egypt and the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).
Egypt had taken steps in the early 1980s to launch a nuclear plant to produce electricity in Dabaa but it was shut down after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.
As long as Washington criticises "Egypt's democratic backslide... it keeps open the door for Putin... to gain influence in Egypt at the expense of US interests," she added. Putin was an early supporter of Sisi, rallying to his side quickly following the coup in July 2013 that overthrew the elected government of Mohamed Morsi, a Muslim Brotherhood leader.
"Which is not to say that the Wests Middle East allies really see in Russia a replacement option rather that they see greater value in both doing some geo-strategic balancing and in being able to use a flirtation with Russia as part of their respective strategies for managing the West, deflecting any Western criticism and guaranteeing future Western assistance and arms sales."

If Mr. Putin was in charge of the TPP and TTIP they would have been completed and ratified long ago with a simple presidential visit to the countries involved.
If there has been some discussion of Egypt joining the Eurasian Economic Union in the press or Russian legislature, I have missed it.
