8. RE: HTML in sig lines - are you just trying to center your current image?
|
Last edited Tue Jan 10, 2012, 07:04 PM USA/ET - Edit history (2) If so, try this:
[p class=post-sig style=text-align:center;]http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll41/furikuri80211/obamapi.jpg[/p]
Some HTML tags work in signatures and inline style sort of works, but the [center] tag doesn't work on DU3 even in posts. |

12. LOL! If we're trying to save electrons, maybe I shouldn't suggest the following...
|
I was going to tell you that there might be too much of a margin at the top of your signature now since the <p class=post-sig> is in there twice (once from the DU software and once from you adding it). Therefore I planned to recommend that you add in a margin-top:0px style property if it seems to be an issue.
[p class=post-sig style=text-align:center;margin-top:0px;]http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll41/furikuri80211/obamapi.jpg[/p]
But that'll probably waste way too many electrons if you post here frequently. |

6. Ah...another class distinction...
|
For now, I'm hanging with the starless.
At some point down the road, I'll made a decision as to whether I think the class distinctions are substantive enough that I'll stay with the starless as a "political" statement... The fees are steep enough here to make them unaffordable to a number of people (although the impact is less at the moment since there was an option to make a smaller contribution that would cover the first year here). I much prefer the more-if-you-can/less-if-you-can't or contribution based model. In most settings where that is an option, I pay more because I can, and that's what makes the system work. If the differences are just fluff it bothers me less - and so far the only difference I am aware of that is substantive is jury duty weighting - and buying a spot on the jury, so to speak, doesn't sit well with me. |

14. Hello Brian ....
|
Haven't seen you since you moved to Portland some six years ago - It is presumed you have moved since ? ....
I was absent from DU(2) since September, during which time DU made the switch to DU3 - I had an avatar in the DU2 version that I had created from a pictorial on a page of 'Breakfast of Champions' by Vonnegut (You know, the asterisk/asshole image) .... I do not see that avatar image URL location anywhere ... I have no idea where that URL is now .... I am guessing it is lost forever .... Oh well ..... I made the original ... I can make a replacement .... Hope all is well .... |

... so I would have to assume that it is something specific to your browser/OS configuration. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you are using Internet Explorer. If so, it probably has something to do with its security settings - which I have never been able to figure out.
First thing to do would be to try using another browser if there is more than one installed on your system (or even download and install another one). If you're stuck with IE and you're comfortable with making a few changes to the settings, the following might possibly get it working: Add the democraticunderground.com domain to your Trusted Sites list (or whatever they call it - don't make me look it up!). This should let you set security settings for just this site, so you can relax the security level until the upload works. Then you can simply remove democraticunderground.com from your trusted sites and everything will be back to normal. Of course, if you aren't using Internet Explorer, the above procedure is useless. The difficulty is probably a security setting somewhere (e.g. browser, operating system, firewall, etc.). It might help the Admins to know what browser, its version number, and the operating system you are using should you be unable to get the upload to work. |

29. Elitism is UNDEMOCRATIC
|
Every feature should be available to every member, period. Creating an "us vs them" hierarchy among members is always destructive to the morale of the community. The Huffington Post learned this the hard way when their community nearly imploded due to the backbiting and agendas of their member-based community moderation team- a program they have wisely scrapped.
Current TV's community is circling the drain as we speak, due to rampant abuse of their flagging system by a clique of conservative regulars, supported by conservative moderators. The result being that progressives have been marginalized on a site that is still being advertised as "progressive". Having avatar options depend on the "star" system is also unfair to those of us who may not be able to contribute as much as we'd like due to health problems. It's frustrating to think that even if I earn the right to upload my own av, I'll just lose it the next time my illness takes a downturn, which is several times a year. Many of your members have busy work and school schedules, young children to care for, or are just hella busy being politically active, which is what we all appreciate, right? You should also consider the fact that a great many older old-school liberals like me have vision problems. I find avatars to be very helpful in confirming that I'm replying to the person I'm intending to speak with. Many of us have accounts on several sites, and sometimes our usual screen name is already taken. The ability to have a unique avatar helps us recognize our friends without playing 20 questions. I understand your intention is to reward top contributors, and provide an incentive for others to be more active on your site, which is a great idea, but why not give them a discount on a subscription or a T-shirt? A reward should reflect a member's achievement, not set the person aside as superior to others. The biggest problem we face as a society is the continual effort of the 1% to monopolize power, resources and privileges for themselves, while denying them to those they deem "less worthy". One of the first steps in setting up a new account is usually uploading an avatar. Running headfirst into your caste system before I've even posted a comment is discouraging, to say the least. Since when is self-expression of my own identity a privilege that must be earned? Despite your best intentions, your message to me and all new members is crystal clear: "You are less than. But stick around, we many eventually acknowledge you as an equal." I respectfully suggest that you reconsider your avatar policy. |
