you better believe things would change in a hurry regarding gun control. Only then would the cowardly politicians start getting the backbone to began curtailing the insane gun fetish America has let loose on its citizens when the general public started getting sick of the violence and demanded something be done.

(26,001 posts)...ubiquitous and easily available everywhere, it's likely we'll be getting more -- not less -- of these events in our future.
The craven apologists for such things will stay craven, keep spouting their NRA-instilled talking points, etc.
However, a saner majority may eventually find the backbone to stand up to the outsized power of that particular corporate lobbying group....

(8,514 posts)But, I don't think it's the culture. Or the guns. I think it's the antidepressant use. I really do.
One of the shooters at Columbine was on Luvox; the others' medical records have STILL not been released. Andrea Yates, who drowned her five children in Texas, was on these drugs. The Amish school shooter was one these drugs. The Atlanta day trader was on these drugs. These drugs are known to cause mania; known to cause homicidal urges. KNOWN to cause them. They are only supposed to take place in a small percentage of people, but there are MILLIONS of Americans now on these drugs and it only takes ONE person who has a bad reaction to do a mass shootings.
I'm not saying that there aren't many people, including the majority of them, who are well served by these drugs, but it only takes ONE shooter to kill a bunch of people. And patients are getting these from their general practicioners, and not being overseen properly.
And, since Bush, we now have NON medical personnel DIAGNOSING our children in our schools, who then send them to the docs who then prescribe these drugs to these children. Is it any wonder there are school shootings, given this scenario?
Take a look at this website: www.ssristories.com. I'm telling you: Something is wrong with this picture.

(13,669 posts)in the USA an average of 25 people per day are murdered with firearms.
It may not be as noteworthy as this single incident, but think about it, twice as many people are shot to death every single day as those who died in
Aurora.
That statistic is sobering.

Oh, wait. That's exactly what's going on already.
Thirty people die every day as a result of drunk driving. That's more deaths than any serial killer or insane shooting rampage ever. So what will "change in a hurry" to get the drunk driving deaths under control?
Hint: nothing.
Nothing will change, because the big money doesn't want anything to change.

(10,164 posts)...they still wouldn't equal the number of "regular" homicides. They wouldn't even come close. But all those killing never seem to produce the same level of breathless hysteria and irrational demands. I wonder why that is?

(82 posts)illegal guns getting into the hands of gangbangers who are killing on average that many every week! Why isn't this more of an outrage than it is?
What Will It Take to Stop Gang Violence in Chicago?
Chicago is trying again to stem its high murder rate, which has been fueled by an entrenched culture of gang violence.
Following a violent Memorial Day weekend during which more than 40 people were shot in the city, the mayors office and the police announced a new strategy intended to streamline coordination between city departments and law enforcement, allowing them to share intelligence and resources to curb gang violence.
Homicides rose 60 percent in the first three months of this year as compared to 2011, according to an April analysis by the Chicago Tribune, due in large part to the citys vast network of gangs.

That's just one city, every week! I would venture to say not one gun was legal and not one shooter had a permit to carry.
Or is that uncomfortable for you to talk about for some reason.
