By all means have Obama start doing gun control at this time.

Here's a better idea: let's wait six months and have the Brady campaign not disastrously lose the national argument on gun control, mmkay? That'll be a good start. I'm all for strict gun control. It's also fairly obvious that gun control has lost the argument, and needs to figure out a new strategy. It's simply not an election issue, unfortunately, and to the great detriment of the polity. But that ship has sailed.

And that would be a lot like running against jim crow when u need the South.

But... if he can win re-election and reshape the Supreme Court, then we would be getting somewhere.

It's called progress.

is a clever albeit cynical position taken with the understanding that it is an effective way to push the country further to the right.

The Right will declare Obama a crazy liberal no matter WHAT he does, so strategically he might as well do the right thing in order to prevent a hard pull to the right.

Voters respect moral strength and certitude, not vacillating political positioning.

With proper due process, of course. Might require tweaks to laws.

Is a Model 18 and is illegal to own. ( The machine gun registry was closed in 1986, IIRC before the G18 was created) As far as I know, there are no legal ones in the U.S. The one in the video is likely a dealer sample, ie, the guy owns a gun store and has one on display for law enforcement to look at.

The drum mag is garbage. Heavy, impractical, unreliable. A novelty, really.

given all the settled law that has gone against gun control already, based on the 2nd amendment. Needless to say - ain't gonna happen.

Although the gun crazies are a minority - they have so many single issue voters who will vote in mass against any sane or rational laws that even attempts to bring American in line with the free and democratic world when it comes to gun control. These kooks simply love their culture of death more than they love their children or their country.

A small outcry over a few shootings can lead to a large outcry if these incidents increase. Almost all restriction have been a result of some hideous crime or crime wave.

I don't think the Democratic Party is willing to pay the political price that would occur for pushing a strong gun control agenda.

This is a good thing, mind you...

a couple of assassinations or an attack by gun crazy militia types to start a race war, and we will end up with stronger gun control measures. Voters react quickly to these types of things and there is a tipping point. You can bury your head in todays attitudes, but don't count on them.
