I know there is a strong pro-NRA contingent here on DU. I don't care. I'm sick and tired of the NRA and its sycophants. I'm sick and tired of this gun-culture they've helped to create and foster. I'm sick and tired of their opposition to each and every sensible piece of legislation designed to slow down the easy access to high-power firearms. It makes me sick to my stomach that every year or so, we have to deal with some mass-shooting. How many more people have to DIE so that the NRA can cling to their easy access to guns?

(16,072 posts)Even if others had been armed...what were they going to shoot at? What are the chances they would have hit innocent bystanders just trying to get out of the theater?
And from what some of the witnesses were saying they thought it was part of a show for the movie!

(147 posts)I have been a gun owner for over fifty years and a one time NRA member. They have gotten so ridiculous. Wake up gun owners it is not about guns it is about the money! If you believe their argument then you should think it is acceptable to own a nuclear weapon. Try relaxing knowing that is a possibility.

(4,458 posts)The NRA is old and antiquated. They must be "retired" for they No Longer are credible, reputable nor Safe for our society when it's easier for a person to buy a gun than to get necessary Mental Health Care.
Odin2005
(53,521 posts)The NRA is a lobby group for firearm manufacturers. They do not represent me, an owner of a rifle for hunting deer and a shotgun for hunting waterfowl.
I think those who buy military-type weapons are compensating for feelings of powerlessness in their own lives, something we all do when we play, say, Call of Duty (shooting Nazis) or Civilization (nuking cities), but for them the drive to compensate is muck more extreme and neurotic.

(37,748 posts)There was a time when I saw them as little more than a benign group, educating its members in both gun safety and law.
But in the here and now, I can't honestly see them as anything more than a political action committee, directed by the neo-cons, pandering to the lowest common denominators through fear-tactics for money to better purchase politicians friendly to their agenda.

My posts get alerted on with some regularity. I guess my "mean words" are as dangerous as the thugs (wink wink) the gun-religionists see lurking under their beds.

Atypical Liberal
(5,412 posts)Nothing more, nothing less.
It is certainly true that most NRA-endorsed politicians are right-wing, but this is not the fault of the NRA. The NRA can and does endorse anyone from any political party so long as they support the second amendment.

Ikonoklast
(23,973 posts)Atypical Liberal
(5,412 posts)I have never claimed that increased firearms in circulation cause a decrease in crime.
All we can say is that we have had decades of ever-more-liberal firearm laws, plus increased numbers of firearms in circulation, and violent crime has continued to decline every year for decades now.
We can't say that increased numbers of firearms or more liberal firearm laws caused this, but it seems pretty unlikely that they hindered it.

(23,340 posts)Their lobbying work is anti-American and destructive to the country.
Atypical Liberal
(5,412 posts)People (and I'm talking individuals, not corporations) should have the the right to organize and protect their interests through collective action.
This is not anti-American.
kwassa
(23,340 posts)Crazy assholes like the NRA, Mr. Wayne Pierre specifically, can organize to their heart's content.
This does not make them less insane.
Atypical Liberal
(5,412 posts)4 million people have organized and joined an organization that represents their interests.
That is exercising the right to organize and effect change through collective action. It is no different than a union.
kwassa
(23,340 posts)Crazy people have unions, too?
Atypical Liberal
(5,412 posts)Anyone else is just "crazy people"?
Again, just like free speech, even speech we disagree with is not un-American, the right to organize and collectively advocate for a cause is not un-American.
kwassa
(23,340 posts)I don't think that the reason that they are un-American are because they are collectively organized. I think the reason they are un-American is that they pursue policies that are destructive to the national interest of this country.
Does that clarify it for you?
Atypical Liberal
(5,412 posts)You are free to lobby for your interests, and we will continue to lobby for ours.
Personally, I think the founders did a fantastic job writing the second amendment, putting the ultimate means of force of arms in the hands of the people. And I think it is distinctly American.

(54,770 posts)I'm sure someone has a link. I don't think 50% of population thinks it's OK for folks to walk around almost anywhere with Automatic weapons. I think if people really realized who is carrying guns out there, they'd vote differently (even regarding semi-auto).
