"Obama Campaign Goes for the Jugular On Romney's Taxes " Sam Stein

WASHINGTON -- Democrats have entered the go-for-the-jugular stage of the presidential race, with President Barack Obama's campaign, the Democratic National Committee and an allied opposition research group all releasing videos today attacking Mitt Romney for his refusal to release more tax returns.

The videos are distinct. The Obama campaign clip will air on television in Pennsylvania, where Mitt Romney is campaigning today. The DNC's version craftily uses Sarah Palin to suggest that John McCain was so nervous about Romney's taxes that he made a historic roll of the dice with his running mate pick in 2008. The video put together by America Bridge 21st Century is a sharp edit job of all the prominent GOP officials and pundits who have begun groaning about Romney's handling of the matter.

All three videos hit at the same theme: Romney's obstinacy on tax returns has become a crippling problem for his campaign and one that Democrats are intent on compounding. Romney has released his completed return for 2010 and his estimated return for 2011, showing an effective 2010 tax rate of 13.9 percent and financial accounts in Switzerland, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands.

"Until he releases additional years of tax returns, the American people won't know why he kept his finances offshore in the Cayman Islands and set up a shell corporation in Bermuda," emailed Ben LaBolt, Obama's campaign press secretary. "Romney would be the first nominee in decades to release only one full year of tax returns. He recently said that his campaign has “put out as much as we’re going to put out” -– which makes you wonder: What is Mitt Romney hiding?"

When Romney says he will only release the legally required number of years Obama should respond by saying..

"Look Mitt, we are running for the highest office in the land. The American people have the right to know as much as possible about their candidates. If you remember a few months ago there was big stink about my birth certificate. It became big news and a distraction for everyone. I didnt legally have to release my long form birth certificate but I did because that was the right thing to do. Now its your turn."

just in time to RUIN Romney's nomination acceptance speech and peak coverage by a huge convention press corps.

The greater the press coverage, the better is the opportuinity to step on the opponent's lame messaging attempts and expose crooked-looking behavior.

He could be making this a huge issue so Dems would focus on it and them look foolish when they find out nothing is there.

Just thinking.

This is a win-win. Romney has put himself in this mess, and it's perfectly useful to exploit his stupidity. Even if he's above board and is only filthy rich, he was still forced to cave to the pressure.

If there was nothing bad, he would WANT them released because each day that goes by I hear more and more people in my real life questioning what he could be hiding. This is negative publicity for him.

And it will continue..people in "real life" will question him, till he releases the info, withdraws from the race, or looses the election.
After that last possibility, then no one will care. He will have lost because he was hiding something

It really ain't rocket science...is it???

Said it was right after the gaffe where McCain didn't know how many houses he had - and they thought adding Multiple Choice Multiple House Mitt to the ticket would be a disaster.

McCain's team didn't do the vet - they hired an outside firm for that.

He said that it absolutely did not pass over Romney because of anything in Romney's tax returns, and called such a suggestion "disgraceful." He then went on to say the reason he picked Palin over Romney was that Palin "was the better candidate."

You just can't make this stuff up!
