Study: College students' grades drop when football team wins

Study: College students' grades drop when football team wins

The University of Colorado football team's losing record this past season should have translated to better report cards for the student body -- or so predicts a study conducted by an economist and graduate students at a fellow Pac-12 school.

University of Oregon economists found that when a college football team is successful, students do less studying, more partying and their grades start to fumble.

"Our results support the concern that big-time sports are a threat to American higher education," the paper's authors conclude in the study, published by the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Male students were more likely than their female peers to increase alcohol consumption -- and decrease studying -- when their teams fared well.
