Presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romneys long-awaited vice presidential selection is imminent, The New York Times reports.
According to The Times, Romneys friends believe the candidate has reached a decision and that the announcement could come as early as this week. The report comes amid intense speculation over who will comprise the other half of the Republican ticket with the likes of former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) and Sen. John Thune (R-SD) all thought to be on the short list.

You know, President Obama must be the cleanest politician we have had in a long time...else the RW would have had smear ads all over the place. The stuff they use in their ads is BS and this tells me the guy must be pretty clean...not PERFECT...but pretty damn clean.

(31,706 posts)Honestly...what will any of the losers being circulated bring to Mitten's party? Most mentioned are there to molify Willard's base...people who are supposedly already voting for him. Energize "the base"? Which base? The teabaggers who supported Gingrich? The fundies who supported Rectorum? The moonbats who howled with Herman Cain? Gonna nominate one of them? Doubtful...so those supporters will still be grumbling (and a quick look in loopy freeperland it's widespread). Pawlenty? What's he bring to the party? He won't help carry Minnesota yet any other state. Rubio? There's a big difference between Cuban and Mexican and many in the Hispanic community don't even think of Rubio as Hispanic. He may make the difference in Florida but beyond that...nada. And the list goes on.
Naming a Veep candidate now is usually the sign of desperation. Ronald Raygun did it in '76 in hopes of forcing a brokered convention. It didn't work. It's the name at the top of the ticket people vote on. The only time a veep matters is in the case of Tundra Snooki in '08...a candidate so unprepared and inept it did drag down the entire ticket.
Cheers...

(30 posts)Presumptive Republican Presidential Nominee, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, is trying to narrow-down his list of potential running mates. The 2012 GOP Convention starts on August 27, so while theres no need to rush, the window of time for Romney to make his choice is becoming smaller and smaller. Maybe I can help.
Ive thought some about the kind of pros and cons Romney and his advisors will be considering as they survey Americas political landscape for a just right running mate. I think Ive found that perfect choice for Romney:
Seems to me Mitt Romneys running mate needs to be [1] a Floridian (bunch of electoral votes down there), who [2] has some Hispanic background, and who is [3] definitely not gay. The other half of this years Republican Ticket must be [4] staunchly pro-gun and, in keeping with that, a real [5] tough defender of law and order (which would also balance out some of Romneys wimpy persona). Romneys No. 2? should be someone [6] who already appeals to the Republican Base (Tea Party-types), and yet is [7] a fresh face in the American political landscape.
Based on the criteria above, I have come up with the PERFECT Mitt Romney Running Mate. And the winner is . . .
