There was some poll a few weeks ago that contained the info that 17% said they absolutely would not vote for a Mormon. I figure every last one of them were repuke/right wingers because Dems usually don't care about religion as a political factor; independents would already be repukes if they cared. So, basically 17% of those Mitt is playing to absolutely will not vote for him. That could translate into stay at home and effect down ticket races also. Let us bow our heads and pray so.........

As a matter of fact, I think that most progressives would vote against any candidate that over-emphasized their religious beliefs.
We tend to look for secular leaders.

(16,113 posts)There's plenty of evidence that some DUers wouldn't vote for a Mormon, even if they don't phrase it in such "blanket" terms.

(16,113 posts)Not everyone's issue is that they're not the "right" religion (like the fundies have), it's that the Mormon church has done things and holds positions that are NOT consistent with Dem goals, and wouldn't vote for someone who would continue an association with such a group.

(13,459 posts)That's me also. I don't care about someone's religion unless it is one actively involved in right wing policy promotion, which the candidate also supports. I have a problem with those policies and do not wish to elect people who support them.
I believe though that Romney really worships $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. And I don't like that either.

(16,113 posts)Just that if a percentage of people say they won't vote for a Mormon, it's not accurate to conclude they must all be repukes. I'm sure some are, but many others are Dems.

This will be an interesting year when the GOP evangelical Christian fixers have to work overtime to get their folks to vote for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's chosen one.

(233 posts)What percentage of voters even realize Romney is a Mormon?
Something like half or more of conservatives in certain red states think Obama is an avowed Muslim. Duh
So I wouldn't be surprised if only a tiny fraction of voters realize Romney is not a Christian.
He's Republican. He won the Republican primary. He supposedly "looks" like he could be on Mount Rushmore (whatever that means), according to some people anyway -- that's all that half of the voters need for him to be acceptable.
