If Romney Wasn't at Bain from 1999 to 2002, He Forgot to Tell the Business Press

If Romney Wasn't at Bain from 1999 to 2002, He Forgot to Tell the Business Press

by Lasgalen Lothir

I did a little digging this morning in the EBSCO Newspaper Source Plus database, the EBSCO Business Source Premier database, and the ProQuest National Newspapers Core database, searching for "Bain Capital" and "Romney", with the search limited to articles published between February 1, 1999 and December 31, 2002, just to see what would come up...I also stumbled across two curious stories, one in the Investment Dealers' Digest in July 1999, the other in the Wall Street Journal in March 2002.

<...>

The first article, "Two Key Executives at Bain Resign to Start a New Shop", was written by Erica Copulsky and publisned in Investment Dealers' Digest on July 19, 1999 (Volume 65, Issue 29, pg. 11-13), is about the resignation of two executives, Geoffrey Rehnert and Marc Wolpow, from Bain Capital, LLC. That's not terribly interesting. However, the author tried to contact Bain to get a comment from them, writing:

Rehnert and Wolpow did not return calls by press time, nor did Bain Capital Chief Executive W. Mitt Romney. (emphasis mine)

<...>

The second article appeared as part of "Ad Notes..." in the Wall Street Journal on March 8, 2002, on page B12. It discusses the acquisition of Grey Global, formerly known as Grey Advertising, by Brookside Capital Partners Fund, identified by the Wall Street Journal as "an arm of the investment house Bain Capital". As in the previous article, the authors tried to contact Brookside to get a comment:

W. Mitt Romney, president and chief executive of Brookside, didn't return calls seeking comment. (emphasis mine)

As with the earlier article, here, the Wall Street Journal identifies Mitt Romney as "president and chief executive of Brookside" "an arm of . . . Bain Capital", this time well into 2002, and no one at Brookside/Bain corrected them.

These aren't the kind of smoking guns the SEC filing papers are, but they do suggest that, at least as far as the business press was concerned, W. Mitt Romney was "Chief Executive" of Bain (or its subsidiary Brookside) between 1999 and 2002.

2. Exactly! Bingo!

As someone who writes media statements, you don't release them to the new wires without executive approval. If Romney wasn't in charge, then his name would have NEVER appeared in press releases. For christ's sake, he was quoted as the spokesperson for the company after he supposedly left. How stupid does his campaign think we are?

3. I really don't understand the teflon coating on this man.........

He's a bully, lacks empathy, and hasn't ever lived in the real world.

I do understand how the Bush family gets away with it, but they're smarter about this stuff and better protected.

9. The Bush and the Romney families are not very far apart

The Bushes married into the Walkers (the "W" in Bush) who are ooooooold white pristene money. First Families stuff.

The Romneys are "nouvaeu riche" to the Walkers - but nothe Bushes. I am not sure how Mitt grandaddy made his money but Mitt's dad was HIM as a candidate for the presidency in 1968 - he lost to Nixon. Romney has achieved a great deal in his life but he didn't get into Harvard from out of the blue (like Obama) and his creation of Bain Capital stinks of connection money.

4. Yeah, he'll probably use those citations to support his position

that he *wasn't* working at Bain, and thus no returned phone calls.

Betcha.

5. Any rational, logical person would suggest that RMoney was in serious trouble.....

But in RMoney land...if I said I wasn't involved I wasn't even if the documents and my subsequent statements contradicted that position. I did not have financial relations with that company after February 1999.

So let's see how this plays out. Lying to the SEC is a felony. Telling stories and dancing around your offshore bank accounts, etc. compromises your credibility with voters.

Me thinks that RMoney's magic pants are scratchy right now.

8. Bain's 2001 annual report to Masschusetts listed Romney as President

and sole Director, and left the date of expiration of his term(s) blank. This is another document misrepresenting Romney to a governmental entity in addition to the SEC filings. I don't know if this kind of falsification could lead to any criminal charges.

11. So who was in charge? Who was second

in command, etc.? This is all typical Romney. The truth is malleable to his present whims. The perfect Fox News candidate.

13. If you call a company and ASK for someone who is no longer there....

..they tell you he's no longer there, AND they give you the name of the new person. It's not like these folks had Rmoney's cell phone number.

C'mon media! Do you damn job! It's right there.. right there. Don't make those of us on the interwebs do it for you.. again...
