Romney Interview Directly Contradicts His Previous Statements About Bain Tenure

Romney Interview Directly Contradicts His Previous Statements About Bain Tenure

By Igor Volsky

Mitt Romney told CBS News‘s Jan Crawford Friday evening that he did not attend Bain Capital meetings after he left the company in February of 1999 to run the Winter Olympics. But this answer appears to contradict sworn testimony he delivered in 2002 “as part of a hearing to determine whether he had sufficient residency status in Massachusetts to run for governor”:

– 2002: “(T)here were a number of social trips and business trips that brought me back to Massachusetts, board meetings, Thanksgiving and so forth.”

– 2012: “I was in Salt Lake City for three straight years. I don’t recall even coming back once to go to a Bain or management meeting. We were, I was out there running the Olympics and it was a full time job, I can tell you that.”

Bain Capital press release described Romney as 'part-time' in July, 1999

by Jed Lewison

A July 19, 1999 press release distributed on behalf of Regan Communications and Bain Capital described Mitt Romney as the "Bain Capital CEO" and said he was "on a part-time leave of absence to head the Salt Lake City Olympic Committee."

The press release, which announced the creation of a new private equity firm by two of Bain's managing directors, included a quote from Romney giving his blessing to the new venture. "While we will miss them," Romney said, "we wish them well and look forward to working with them as they build their firm."

The press release, which was obtained through a simple Nexis search, is posted in full below the fold. It appears to contradict claims by both Romney and Bain that he had no involvement in the company's day-to-day operations after February 11, 1999.

In his most recent financial disclosure form, Romney said he had retired from the firm in February of 1999. "Since February 11, 1999," the document states, "Mr. Romney has not had any active role with any Bain Capital entity and has not been involved in the operations of any Bain Capital entity in any way."

According to this press release, however, Romney was the firm's part-time CEO at least through July of 1999, contradicting the Romney campaign's claim that SEC filings listing him as the firm's CEO and sole owner were simply a "quirk in the law."

1:13 PM PT: Worth noting: As Hunter Walker writes at Politicker, Marc Walpow worked at Bain in 1994 during Romney's senate campaign. His characterization of Romney's role while on leave?

“I reported directly to Mitt Romney . . . You can’t be CEO of Bain Capital and say, `I really don’t know what my guys were doing,’” Mr. Wolpow said of Mr. Romney role at the company during his leave.

2. The 2002 Statements, Ma'am, Were Under Oath, If Recollection, Serves

Is he lying now, or did he perjure himself then? Enquiring minds want to know.

"Falsus in unum, falsus in omnibus."

"Romney loves America like a tick loves a dog."

Totally done. Finito. Toast.

How does he continue his campaign?

I ask this question in all sincerity.

6. Because he's a Republican

They apparently operate with a different set of rules from the rest of us.

I am hearing all sorts of Romney defenders. It's his money ... this is no big deal ... these management decisions happen like this all the time.

I can only imagine if this were coming out and Romney was a Democrat. There would be hearings and charges and demands to step down immediately.

10. Yep

If this was a D, it would be over, game set and match, even if they did not have the couple dozen other campaign ending type gaffes disasters that Romney has had to this point ...

IMO, this is the media doing a bit of a reverse on the "to be fair" meme after totally reframing last weeks epic win for the president/country on HCR into a loss for him and a win for the Rs.

SOMETIMES, when they go overboard on negatively framing the the D, they get a short moment of lucidity and actually do their jobs as neutral journalists, hence, actually treating this as the disaster it is for Romney.

But, that was this week.

Next week, it will be bad news for Obama because bees aren't pollinating or something like that.

9. When did he leave Utah to move to Massachusetts?

In what state was he a resident?

He claims to have left Massachusetts at least by February 11, 1999 and to have stayed there 3 (or 4?) years. Does that make his return to Massachusetts some time in 2002 or 2003? When did he run for governor of Massachusetts? Where was he residing at the time?

Wikipedia says:

In 1999, he was hired as President and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, and he helped turn the fiscally troubled games into a success.

He was elected Governor of Massachusetts in 2002 but did not seek re-election in 2006.

. . . .

On March 19, 2002, Swift announced she would not seek her party's nomination, and hours later Romney declared his candidacy, for which he would face no opposition in the primary. In June 2002, Massachusetts Democratic Party officials contested Romney's eligibility to run for governor, citing residency issues involving his time in Utah for the Olympics. That same month, the bipartisan Massachusetts State Ballot Law Commission unanimously ruled that he was an eligible candidate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitt_Romney

There is a lot of interesting information in that article -- especially about how he overcame the claim that he was just a rich guy during his 2002 campaign for governor of Massachusetts.

This is going to get interestinger and interestinger.
