2. Have the Republicans found their "not Mitt" at last?

Romney seems to be whacking at Gingrich pretty good, and the Democrats are placing a few sucker punches on Newt as well. I don't know how long Gingrich can deny his essential nature, but the prospects for capturing the Republican nomination have never been better. Even granting that he'll get munched in the general, being the party's standard bearer might be enough of a prize to keep Gingrich on task. But if he senses the nomination slipping away, look for Gingrich to revert to form and indulge all his baser political urges. It won't be pretty, but it could be pretty funny.

Not in my wildest dreams did I think we'd have Newt to run against for President. Surely all Democratic strategists are jumping for joy at the prospect. The only better candidate for the GOP to run would be Palin or Trump.

That's the way we felt a few decades ago when Reagan got the nomination, too...

While Newt may be as extreme as Reagan was, he's not the choice of a unified Republican Party, and he hasn't exhibited anything approaching the appeal to Independents that Reagan did.

Remember, they were much more accustomed to the Nelson Rockefeller-Bob Dole-Gerald Ford type of Rethug. I distinctly remember an "anybody but Reagan" faction that was being reported about by US News and World Report.

Newt's been cleverly crafting a limited appeal to the independents, that's what his whole "25 years and a member of a church" stand on illegal immigration is all about. That's what the whole sofa appearance with Nancy Pelosi about global warming was about, too.

He's crafty, and he'll defend any fake moves towards the center in his bid to grab the brass ring when he's talking to Repukes. Nobody's been as craven as this guy in getting what he wants.

Maybe Ron Paul or Trump or Bloomberg. Which in turn also guarantees an Obama victory.
