It's an amazing picture, though. There are three pretty normal-looking dudes sitting to the left of the pic, and then... white sox, plaid pants, saddle shoes? Oh, god. If I'd dressed like that in my HS, I would have been thrown out of the front door -- without it being opened.

Two things though: I never would have been caught dead in white sox, and saddle shoes with plaid pants... oi! And did you dig the heels on those shoes?
There is a lovely little site called "retrospace" that posts a lot of yearbook pictures from back in the late 60's/early 70's. And has a series called "miniskirt monday" which definitely deserves wider attention. -- Mal |

14. Believe it or not, when I was in school the style for guys was white socks...
|
...with black Oxfords and blue jeans. That lasted only for a while, fortunately.
Another real fashion atrocity was those skinny ties. I can't really complain, though, as my color palette at the time was quite atrocious itself. I can only say, in our defense, that we had that music. That kinda made up for all our faults. |

|
Did you have a dress code? In '68, I was instrumental in getting ours thrown out of JHS. By the time I got to high school, the only code was "wear clothes."
My music wasn't so bad. Hendrix, Neil Young, Zeppelin... Top song of my Prom in '73 was "Take a Walk On the Wild Side." "And the colored girls go doop-da-doop, doop-da-doop." Lou Reed couldn't get away with that crap now. -- Mal |

25. What is cool is that all of that "crap" we used to listen to is still being listened to
|
... and not just by us old guys. Virtually every 60's classic on YT has remarks from some 15-16 year old kid that thinks it's great.
I avoided "that place" by the skin of my teeth. It's kind of a good news/bad news thing having been born in '56. I missed Woodstock, but I missed the Central Highlands, too. What I hear, that ends up being a pretty good deal. Although, god love me, when I was sixteen I was ready to volunteer, join the infantry, and go Airborne All the Way. Damned John Wayne movies. -- Mal |

29. I hear you, Mal
|
I actually volunteered for the draft--and for Infantry, OCS, VN, and combat duty. What did I know? I was 18.
I missed Woodstock because I was in-country at the time, but I actually got to see the moon landing on TV there. It is cool, and a testimony to the endurance of that music, that young people today are playing and listening to it. We've lost some of our talented musicians along the way, but some are still performing. Sir Paul, Fogerty, vets of the Eagles and Crosby, Stills and Nash and Led Zep (and the Yardbirds), and others. Enjoy it while we can. |

32. I wound up in college ROTC at the end of '73
|
And that was a real wake-up call. Bad times for the army -- in a college of about 30,000 students, our "brigade" had about 30 people in it. And the seniors -- who were going to be commissioned and sent to VN at the beginning of '74 -- were some really scary people. Let's just say... their leadership did not inspire confidence. I was an ignorant 17 year old idiot whose only military "knowledge" was those John Wayne movies and some military history books, but even I could tell these guys (and gals, we had 4 women in the "brigade") were going to be bad news. They were taking anything they could get -- hell, my nickname in the brigade was "Zero," nuff sed.
Thank god for You Tube. I've discovered tons of great music I never knew existed. Rory Gallagher, for example -- he was about unknown in my part of the country, and damn, I wish I could have seen the boy live. He's been in Rock and Roll Heaven for a long time, now. It's getting crowded up there, but maybe it's true, the music will never die. -- Mal |
