Leo DiCaprio invests in Fisker, drives a Karma hybrid...

When it comes to promoting a "green car," there's no better celebrity to have in your corner than Leonardo DiCaprio. Now Fisker Automotive has him -- both as a buyer of the Karma plug-in hybrid luxury car and as an investor.

Titanic star DiCaprio made an impact nearly a decade ago when he shunned the usual trappings of the celebrity car world -- BMWs, Cadillac Escalades or other luxury barges -- in favor of a humble Toyota Prius. The Prius hybrid, from a dealership in Santa Monica, Calif., symbolized care for the planet.

Ever since, automakers have looked to his stamp of approval. As such, DiCaprio and Fisker issued a joint announcement this week saying they are going to work together to promote the cause of global sustainability.

"My foundation supports efforts to secure a sustainable future for our planet and all its inhabitants," says DiCaprio in a statement. "I am delighted to be working with Fisker Automotive to promote this shared vision."

Did Leo do any homework on what kind of MPG ratings this thing returns?

http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/10/21/the-fisker-karmas-20-m-p-g-conundrum/

With its range-extender gasoline engine engaged, the Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid was rated this week by the Environmental Protection Agency at just 20 miles per gallon. The E.P.A. figure was first reported by the blog GreenCarReports.com.

snip

According to the E.P.A., the Karma has a purely electric range of 32 miles, in the vicinity of the Chevrolet Volt‘s 35-mile rating, and a mileage equivalent in battery mode of 52 MPGe, compared with the Volt’s 93 MPGe.

52 MPGe isn't bad, but it's not great either. It sacrifices a lot of MPG to get the extra horsepower. Now, the Tesla S, THAT thing is a work of art and performance.
