So, What is pissing you off tonight?

Mine, since it is 4th of July...

That as long as I live, I will be from a country where the last president
invented a fake war where hundreds of thousands of people died...AND..
he and his VP are resting comfortably somewhere, sipping on something.

We are not on top in so many things, too many to mention. These we
can change. But, we can never change that we started a fake war.

more than all three of them put together.

http://www.topix.com/forum/world/china/TUTSHGNVMTLVGK6RF

US Has 5% Of Worlds Population Yet 25% of World Prison

"The U.S. corrections system has gone through an unprecedented expansion during the last few decades with a more than 400% jump in the prison population and a corresponding boom in the prison construction. At the end of 2008, 2.3 million adults were in state, local, or federal custody, with another $5.1 million on probation or parole...Globally, the United States has 5% of the world's population but 25% of its prisoners."

What's fueled the growth, the report says, is "tough drug enforcement, stringent sentencing laws, and high rates of recidivism."

(snip)

The U.S. prison industry now directly employs about 777,000 people and the Labor Department expects the prison labor market to grow 9% by 2018, accompanied by a projected 16% increase in the number of parole and probation officers. "By comparison, there were 880,000 workers employed in the entire U.S. auto manufacturing sector."

Of course, there's a host of moral and social dilemmas created by high rates of imprisonment -- "increased income inequality and more concentrated poverty" and "the fact that African Americans and Hispanics are far more likely than whites to be incarcerated," for starters.

or remember what it's like to live in a country that's not making war. We've been at war most or all of their lives. The neocons like to bitch about the legacy we're leaving our children. Maybe they should think about how abhorrent it is that we're creating a generation of people that think making war is a normal way to deal with other countries.

Nothing new. They've never shown up for illegal fireworks. I think they don't want to deal with drunken homeowners shooting professional grade fireworks on the 4th. Too dangerous for the cops, I think.

And so, the usual war zone sounds continued until about 1 A.M. last night. I go out and watch for fire dangers at my house and neighbors' houses. I suppose the fire department would still show up if I called 911 about an actual fire.

I'm a veteran, and an avid student of the history of World War II. There once was a time when military operations were given fairly innocuous, but sometimes still apropos code-names: "Operation Husky, Operation Torch, Neptune, Overlord", etc.

Now we feel the need to propagandize military code-names, as if we were some silly action movie.

Operation Just Cause.

Operation Enduring Freedom.

And of course, the one that will go down in history as an international example of pure bad faith: Operation Iraqi Freedom.

That's a joke; a sick, disgusting joke. And also, probably, the first time in history both sides used the same code name for the same conflict...

It's been fucking hot. I try to keep things cool by opening up at night and closing down during the day. It works here in rural Michigan. But we just had a wonderfully violent thunderstorm -- no tornadic activity. It rolled through quickly and made things tolerably cool. It's still in the freaking 80's at 2 AM. No AC here, so I depend on nature. Tomorrow I will put a fan in the stairwell to the cellar. It's always cool there.

But tonight I am loving the thunder boomers!

63. The Tories

Jul 2012

My other half tells me that the Tories have so screwed up the NHS that the old dear may have to start charging for some services. This is, of course, what the Tories have wanted from the beginning. Our governing party says we are in for a "decade of austerity", regardless of the fact that it hasn't worked, has never worked and can never work. By "austerity", what they mean is cutting off support from the poor and sick.

I'm one of the sick. I suffer from Major Depressive Disorder. Every day, I have to fight against an incredible urge to commit suicide. It's like the proverbial monkey on the back, never going away. As a way of coping with that, I frequently (every few days) self-harm (not the best coping mechanism, I know). At least once a week, I come within minutes of suicide. I also suffer from a wide array of other neuroses, some coming from my MDD (I am agoraphobic, for example), some not. In addition to that, my back and knees are so shot that I have to use crutches to stand or walk for more than a couple of minutes.

Here, there are two main disability benefits: ESA and DLA. ESA now has the harshest disability test in the world. It's on a points system and, for example, you get no points for not having hands if you can pick things up with your stumps. On top of that, the test is administered by a company known and proven to be, at best, utterly incompetent and incentivised to fail as many as possible. We are reassessed at least every year and suicides from the stress of this are not unknown. DLA used to have a saner test. Until the Tories decided they were going to scrap DLA, replace it with a new benefit called PIP and boot 20% off the rolls in the process. I'm aware, every moment of the day, how precarious my continued life is, how dependent I am on how much of a prick the Tories decide to be today.

And our PM has plans to make the benefits regime even harsher. The minister in charge of this (Iain Duncan Smith, who once co-authored a paper with Rick Santorum) has said that it's a "sin" to be out of work and disabled people "fester" on benefits. The bastard scum Tories are actively trying to kill us off and I'm now of the opinion that assassination would be a justifiable response. They are dragging us back to Victorian notions of the undeserving poor. They and their toadies in the press have drummed up an atmosphere of outright hatred for anyone who claims benefits for any reason. And yes, this shit affects my mental health. I have to live with the constant worry that the Tories will decide to be cunts today and cut off what little money I get from the state. Oh, but they cut the taxes of the rich. Dropped them from 50% to 45%. Plenty of money for that.

So really, it's partly pissing me off and partly despair. But thanks for letting me vent.

should not have marched
it was way too hot and i am way too old

did not make entire parade--dropped out about 100 yards short.

anyway had to do it because it is a very republican area and too many other dems had
already no showed.... it was down to 3 of us........

i am pissed off
-because i am getting old and it is getting noticable
-because of the catcalls and insults we got along the way from the facists
-because i could not finish the parade and was sick for the rest of the day--Better now
-because there were only a couple of us--there should have been more
