Campaign 2012: Obama fundraising plea says he will be outspent (LA Times)

** The critical issue here being discussed on MSNBC now is that the Romney Superpacs will buy up all the television time in September / October so the dems need the donations now to reserve time or be blocked out.

Last month, with the GOP nominating fight settled, Mitt Romney and the Republican National Committee out-raised Obama and the Democratic National Committee for the first time, $77 million to $61 million—that’s one month’s total -- leading to the president’s entreaty on Tuesday. “I will be,” he warned, “the first president in modern history to be outspent in his re-election campaign, if things continue as they have so far.”

Pitching to his supporters, the president requested $3 (or more) to fight back against an anticipated onslaught of $1 billion-plus in advertising “trashing me, you and everything we believe in.”

“We can be outspent and still win,” Obama emailed. “But we can't be outspent 10 to 1 and still win.”

2. is this because of Citizens United?

because the corporate interests are flooding romney with cash because they will do anything to win? It sickens me that we are watching our country being bought and sold hand over fist and even our own President has to fight against these corrupt bastards.

What could he do though? if he attacks wall street and the rest of the plutocracy to take back his own power over the country, they will make damn sure he fails...he is in a hell of a position ... i pray that he can succeed against these evil robber barons. Integrity means a lot, but when the rest of them are playing so dirty, he may need to find a way to take drastic measures and somehow limit their reach...

3. Yes, and here's a Mother Jones magazine visualization of "dark money"

Follow the Dark Money

If Citizens United was the Big Bang of a new era of money in politics, here's the universe it formed: rapidly expanding super-PACs and nebulous 501(c) groups exerting gravitational pull on the 2012 election. Mouse over a "planet" to peer into its funding and top donors. Sizes are based on latest reported revenues (if disclosed). This data is live—come back for weekly updates.
