Just a heads up. 2011 will be the second December since 1877 with no snow in NYC.

The crazy weather continues around here, and this time in a good way (sort of). We got a snow storm on October 30, and no snow in November and December. The last time there was no snow in December was 2006. This will be big news in a couple days.

Here is a DU thread from 2007: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=115x76908

Of course, no snow in December doesn't mean we'll get off easy. Here is a story about what happened in Buffalo in 1998-99.

"January of 1999 saw the snow-globe tip upside down. By January 11th, several days of snow had totalled a couple feet of snow in many areas. On that date, Buffalo Mayor Anthony Masiello asked the Common Council to call for the National Guard to be deployed to the streets of the Queen City to help with snow removal.

By the end of January '99, 65.1 inches of snow had fallen, leading up to a higher-than-average season total of 100.5 inches of snow. We typically see about 90 inches of snow according the the National Weather Service."

Buffalo is much different than NYC, but there is some history here.

We renamed/nicknamed the regional HSBC operations center, "Holy Shit the Building Collapsed" after the roof caved in due to the tremendous weight of the snow. They were offline for several weeks as I recall.

Coming from the South, I assumed it was normal.

No, no, no I was told by long time residents. They were a little freaked out.

“We've had the wettest year on record,” said Deputy River Master Gary Paulachok. The first above-normal rainfall month in 2011 was February, he added, “and then precipitation in every month (through September) was above normal.”

But current weather models are painting a better picture.
“It looks like as we head into January, our precipitation amounts are going to be close to normal,” said Tom Kines, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather.com. The same should hold for February and March according to current models.

We've had an immense amount of rain this year: 30 inches above average for Sullivan County, 25 to 30 inches above in Ulster and 20 to 25 inches above in Orange. The remnants of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee

I'm thankful for a break. I'm not looking forward to January and February 2012 because I'm bound to see some heavy snowfalls driving the Western Michigan shoreline everyday.

We had a couple fluffs in Oct, no more than 4 inches...and now it is BONE DRY. Oh, and a record high temp for today, 51...!!!

What sucks for us is that the economy here is SO tied to the weather...and we had snow last year till JUNE. (which sucked for all of us)
I didn't see the leaves come out till mid-june!
...the animals are all messed up too, the bears aren't hibernating, and the racoons and squirrels are also seen more than usual about this time. I have felt bad for all the little itty-bitty birds too, so I have been putting out birdseed on the front lawn for a couple weeks now.
