Yeah it does matter.
Democracy is a fragile thing..

(111,241 posts)onto his wife, that's what she's for, after all, to keep track of all the stuff he's too lazy to care about.
The problem isn't that he's an illiterate tool. The problem is that he's an illiterate tool who's been whipped into a frenzy by stories about his threatened masculinity to the point that he votes his illiteracy.

(42,641 posts)Agreed. I hate when I hear: I am not interested in politics. They are all the same.

(19,037 posts)These people are about to get to live inside of a full authoritarian fascist state.
And if you think these maniacs will give up power if Congress impeaches and votes to remove them, you haven't read your history. Trump and Bannon will not leave the White House peacefully, period.

(5,730 posts)She thought she was so sophisticated. I asked, did you vote for Ralph Nader too? Proudly, yes.
I said, in other words, you voted for Bush and Trump.
How did you like that Iraq war?
Couldn't help myself.
She had some spill about 3rd party, green party, all the same.
I just said, you voted for Bush and Trump, and walked off.

(30,733 posts)I might have told her to fuck off and die.
I did tell someone she had blood on her hands. But I am not in any mood to be nice to those idiots any more.

(30,733 posts)They will have to be taken out by force, if they are removed legally.
I will never forget that trump said he would only honor the peaceful transfer of power if he won the Presidential election. That was chilling. Yet, all those talking heads covering the inauguration spoke glowingly of the peaceful transfer of power.
Fuckers. Look what their constant free campaign coverage of trump is costing them now. We need them to win out against trump and remain a free press, but I hope they learn something from this.

(19,037 posts)People, even on the left, are still in denial. This is happening right now, we have a madman in power and he has nuclear weapons he cannot wait to use. And Bannon is all about genocide, that sums up his world view, "kill them all."

(5,730 posts)Made up the booze, but he acts like it. He interviewed CONway the full hour right before one of the debates, like she was a sweet little star student.
Now, he legitimizes DT almost every night, by asking Repubs serious questions about DTs policies. Not watching him again. I huess thats why MSNBC gets to go right now.
Good for CNN. Even though he's put them in time out, I am so glad the took the right side. Ill have to watch them in spite of hating Kayleigh, but I'll turn her off.
He is going to let in a few each time, based on what they said about him. Fuck the truth. The rest go to time out.
That's how he plans to control them. It's a fake press conference...just don't show up and bare down on the facts. That will get him more. Bullys only respond to someone knocking them down. If they let him bully them, there is no free press.

(4,221 posts)Forget this sympathizing with the Trump voters, we need to get the non-voters to wake the heck up.
Many non-voters don't vote because the process intimidates them and they don't want to admit that they don't know anything about it.
(Don't think that is true? My husband informed me that in the last year three of his adult employees had to be taught how to research something on Google and he had to explain what jury duty is to one.)
If there were displays of voting booths and sample ballots everywhere (library, grocery store, flea market) the participation levels would go up, I guarantee it.
There are low levels of civic knowledge, compounded by low literacy levels. I recently read some depressing stats on literacy ....basic comprehension and language skills is a struggle for millions ( a sizeable chunk) of Americans.
*Edit - Adding some of what I remember reading in those stats: in addition to language and comprehension problems, mathematical problems are a challenge unless presented in simple text, and anything more complex than simple short prose is a challenge. One in five Americans cannot read or do math above fifth grade level.

College graduates seem to fall in the overall trend.. https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2005/12/16/literacy
But there are also those wilfully ignorant of politics, for whom the brecht quote would apply - These cynics are a dime a dozen every election.

(30,733 posts)A few years ago, we had an important school referendum in our community. Our elementary school was so overcrowded it was ridiculous. The referendum failed the first time. We worked hard to get it passed the second time. I registered many parents who had never voted before. The referendum passed.
After election day, I spoke to one of the Democratic judges in my precinct. She said they had to help all sorts of people. They were embarrassed and shy about voting. Many of them left more confident. I hope they voted again, but I think many of them did not.
I call people in my precinct and talk to them at home and out in the community. Many of them refuse to vote in primaries, or in any non-Presidential years. I have phone banked a lot, too. It is amazing how many people just don't bother.
