"Gun walking," Mexican drug gangs, and the Dead Border patrol agent

Now let me see if I've got this right -

1. A U.S. Border Patrol agent was shot by a Mexican drug thug (MDT)

2. The gun used by the MDT turned out to be one that originally came from the U.S.

3. As part of a "gun walking" plan whereby guns were allowed to be supplied by the DOJ to MDTs

4. So that the DOJ could follow the guns to the MDT kingpins in an effort to put them in jail.

5. And a bunch of other stuff which is not relevant to the point that I am about to make - really - I wouldn't have you read all of this if I wasn't coming to a point, so just wait for it -

I heard on T.Hall show this afternoon on MSNBC that the family of the dead Border Patrol agent is grieving and gosh darnit they want -nay, they demand- some answers.

My question is this: is anybody alleging that #1 would not have happened but for #3. That would mean that the MDT would not have had a gun but for #3. But #2 was already happening anyway. and the MDT would have had a gun anyway, and so the guy would probably be dead anyway.
