i have a friend who collects coats for the homeless, and goes out any time it gets below zero looking for people who need them.
i think pretty much everyone who isnt dirt poor has an extra coat hanging around. when i ask friends, i usually get 3 or 4.
this is a great idea.

(6,251 posts)3. Our church decided that coats were needed in our area last winter.
In a couple of weeks, our congregation (about 75 people, average age in the 60s) collected 150 coats -- adults' and children's sizes. The coats were donated to several different organizations that deal with the homeless. We start this year's coat drive in a week or so.

something waterproof for a top layer goes a long, long, long way.
