"You know, before we all started having health care, in the olden days, our grandparents, they would bring a chicken to the doctor. They would say I'll paint your house.... In the old days that's what people would do to get health care with their doctors. Doctors are very sympathetic people. I'm not backing down from that system."

(13,776 posts)If she'd made it to the Senate, she'd obviously have preferred to receive her salary in the form of chickens and cans of paint. And her doctors could have paid back their student loans with bits of string.

So this lady runs a casino.
I would love to see what a slot machine that takes chickens looks like.
And I'm imagining croupiers pushing piles of chickens across the green baize to whomever wins at craps.

(51,274 posts)Great Depression was my grandparents time and having a doctor come to your house cost about $5. Will doctors return to those policies as well?

(9,808 posts)-- The meds available were either ineffective, toxic or addictive, and sometimes all of the above. There's a reason we've taken laudanum and mercury pills off the market.
-- Your doctor might have been trained at the equivalent of a community college, a for-profit trade school, as an apprenticeship, or not at all. Anyone could paint a shingle and call themselves a doctor.
-- Even routine surgeries were often fatal. A burst appendix or ectopic pregnancy had a better than even chance of killing. Without blood transfusions, sterile surgery, antibiotics and imaging, doing nothing was often safer than doing something.
-- What interventions were available ranged from useless but harmless to let's make this worse! Dehydrated? Let's make you vomit more! Blood loss from a wound? Let's add to it by opening another vein! Burns? Let's add a blister or some acid over the top.
Fuck the old days. The old days were miserable.
