Obama's Top Campaign Lawyer, DEMANDS Retraction From KARL ROVE

" The Obama campaign's top lawyer fired off a letter to Karl Rove Thursday, demanding a retraction of a "mystifying" comment Rove made and raising questions about his upcoming appearance at a Mitt Romney campaign event.

The letter is the second that Bob Bauer has sent to Rove this week. The first argued that Rove could no longer insist that his advocacy group, Crossroads GPS, was policy oriented -- a distinction that allowed it to shield the names of its donors. The follow-up letter, obtained by The Huffington Post, makes that same point, arguing that there is no "social welfare" component to the group's operations.

But it also challenges Rove in more direct terms. Bauer hints that Rove, the chief strategist to former President George W. Bush, is colluding with Romney, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, by homing in on Rove's presence at a Romney retreat in Utah this upcoming weekend. He also expands the scope of his complaint to Rove's role with American Crossroads, the super PAC arm of Crossroads GPS.

"I understand that you will traveling to join Governor Romney this weekend at a luxury fundraising event in Utah –- an appearance that press reports note 'could raise questions because of campaign finance laws barring any coordination between super PACS and actual campaigns,'" Bauer wrote, likely alluding to American Crossroads, the super PAC arm of Crossroads GPS. "But I would ask that this trip not delay the immediate correction of your misstatements I am requesting."

The letter also picks up on an exchange between the two that was escalated Wednesday night when Rove accused Bauer of having a political vendetta against him that was rooted in earlier legal conflict. In an appearance on Fox News, Rove insisted that Bauer had represented Dana Jill Simpson, the former Republican operative in Alabama who served as a whistleblower against Rove and others in the case of former Gov. Don Siegelman.

That is unless you count death as a social welfare component.

5. Rove doesn't care

He's operated beyond the law for so long he thinks he's invincible. Sadly, he probably is.

7. No one is invincible.

Which will make it that much more devastating for Rove when he is finally brought down.

9. exactly. this article is almost laughable, considering the past decade.

except that political finger wagging isn't funny, and the response/reaction to Rove vis a vis campaign attorneys public memo's to the press (as if Rove gave a shite in the least) is almost pathetic. Rove is laughing his ass off no doubt. almost makes our guy's peeps seem very naive at best.

17. Too bad Mr. Bauer's letter doesn't have any "or else" teeth to it.

"Bauer's letters allowed him to make his point without actually putting many legal or political resources behind the effort."

19. Here's an important point: have you noticed the conspicuous absence of talk about TORT REFORM

in this election cycle?

There are two main sources of FUNDING for the Democratic Party: 1. LABOR UNIONS, and 2. LITIGATION LAWYERS.

Traditionally, the Republicans have gone HARD after BOTH. This time around they're only going after the Unions, and leaving the lawyers alone. Why? I think they realized they awoke a sleeping giant. If you go after lawyers, and their ability to make money by suing corporations in class action lawsuits, they'll fight back with LAWSUITS.

Well...how is Obama fighting VOTER PURGES? Lawsuits.
How is Obama trying to take down Roves Superpack? Lawsuits.

The Republicans have toned down their rhetoric about Tort Reform, but I think it might be too late. I think their free ride on political dirty tricks with no consequences may be over. The civil suits are on the way.

I mean, just look how great it's been for America to have Karl Rove free to rape and pillage what's left of our democracy.

He has proved it so many times that I'm surprised anyone on DU would think otherwise. So is Bush, Cheney and all the other GOP henchmen.

Obama let them walk Scotfree. Why bother now?

18. It was a dumbass thing for Bauer to do, IMHO.

He should have waited until Rove got BACK from the meeting with Romney, then filed a complaint with the FEC and DOJ regarding collusion between the Romney campaign and one of its PACs, and then used Rove's presence there as probable cause to launch a civil lawsuit against Crossroads, and subpoena Rove's emails as evidence of the collusion.

True, generally the FEC doesn't do anything to enforce actual federal election law, but it would be observing form in preparation for the civil suit.
