I would ban alcohol before pornLast edited Tue Jun 19, 2012, 03:20 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1)
The thread lamenting porn's effect on society got a surprising number of posters agreeing with it, but if I were to think about true evils of society, I would think alcohol causes far more harm to society than porn does. I don't need to describe the well known and multiple health considerations and problems brought on by alcohol, or ancillary effects such as drunk driving or spousal abuse, broken families, etc. So all those who think porn has a rather negative effect on society, alcohol is a bigger negative IMHO and if I were to choose one to ban, it would be the booze. What do you say?

5. I'm not interested in banning either, though I recognize that both can have negative effects
|
depending on the individuals involved, context, use, etc.
Some may be, I'm sure, but I don't think most of the people who are interested in discussing potentially negative effects of porn are necessarily interested in banning it. |

Last edited Tue Jun 19, 2012, 03:44 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) I believe treating women as less than equal, as objects, as things to assault contributes to violence against women. "Female Friendly" porn is about sex--not violence. You want porn? Make it non-violent. Make it equal. Make women valuable--not objects.

Not all porn is created equal. As one person stated, further down the comments, there is some non-violent porn. That is not the porn I am talking about. And, yes, you know it when you see it. |

I am of the catharsis school of thought - every time a potential rapist watches that instead of acting on his or her impulses, is a good thing.

32. Children cannot consent. Rape simulation is protected speech. Weapons? Like gun play?
|
It's just like in movies - when Dirty Harry kills those people he's using blanks, and they are actors. Same thing with "gun play" porn.
The line is consent. If you are over 18, you can consent. If you consent, you can simulate any activity you want, including death, rape or whatnot. Of course, many people have a problem differentiating fantasy from reality. But that's a problem with that person, not with the industry as a whole. |

At least not 99% of the porn out there
Most of it pays very well, and the internet has shined a light on the industry that wasn't there before. But keep believing the fundy propaganda if you want. Dawn Warswick has an agenda and an axe to grind. ...Or you can ask the porn stars themselves... |

And heavens, who on earth wants a return to prohibition? At a time when we have finally started to have rational discussions about legalizing marijuana, we are going to go back to a prohibition on liquor? |

There's really no need to one-up the evils of the porn vs booze. Just recognize the harm each can do to any individual. There's really no reason to defend porn or booze to the death.
