Overgeneralizing about porn doesn't win convertsLast edited Tue Jun 19, 2012, 12:09 AM USA/ET - Edit history (1)
I have seen very nasty sexist degrading titles and commentary in porn and that is disturbing. People around the world should boycott that type of depiction and behavior en masse.
On the other hand, when people who are rightly offended by the type of porn described above go about and say porn this and porn that. Porn is degrading to women. Porn is sexist. Porn isn't degrading to women, the asshole commercial entity that markets sexist and violent depictions towards females is degrading to humanity. Along with those who unwittingly or not consume it. That is why I commend DUers who have recently in the past spoke out against the hurtful elements in the industry. Their point is even better made if they do not go about lumping all "porn" together when that would encompass many innocent and artistic depictions in the process. A woman who flashes her breasts at a rock concert. Is she degrading to women? The guy next to her that snaps a picture, is his behavior degrading to all women on the planet? The photographer who depicts sensual implied nudity, is he or she degrading to women? Is any of that sexist or just normal take a deep breath expressions of human sexuality and liberty. If you start sounding like you are opposing that, you will lose so many people that would have been fighting right there with you. If you leave off that qualifier just once we would understand the sentiment but we may not follow the logic. Because with that overgeneralization, as with all thinking errors, comes emotional disturbance, and following that censorship and authoritarian mechanisms that do far more damage than what they seek to remedy. So oppose sexism and violence, leave porn in general alone. To the extent that you have done so, good job and you have allies and many of them are male.
