Why do our universities and government need to be run like a business

when the best and the brightest in business (Wall Street) ran the world's economies off a cliff?

Here's another example of university suffering from this failed run-it-like-a-business mantra:

1. This is promulgated by fascists. Plain and simple

Every time you hear someone say this, it's either because they are a fascist, or becuase they've been deluded by one. It is a rallying cry to completely destroy all semblance of Democracy in this nation.

3. No profit, no CEO's.

No board of Directors, no stock holders.

Just look at the savings by having government services do it over private enterprise.

6. What vital services that you depend on do you want Boehner, Gringrich

Delay, Cheney, Bush, etc to be running?

Lets not forget that Republicans win elections too.

13. Nah, that doesn't work either

Look at the Soviet Union as an example.

Now if you wanted to say something like all businesses should be non-profit, or just businesses like medical and universities should be non-profit (anything that people need to live healthy lives), then I would agree.

Government does some things well, the "regulated" market others. Mixing them is just a recipe for another disaster.

4. Why should we run banks like businesses?

They failed, and WE THE PEOPLE bailed them out, so why leave those that failed in charge, and others in these banks employed, so that they can swindle more money from us?
We have to take our rightful possession of these institutions, and make them cooperatives, after we fire ALL management there. Make them responsible to WE THE PEOPLE who bailed them out, and make sure that they can never commit that crime again!

Capitalism has therefore failed.

That's what I say when one of these knuckle-draggers tells me that (s)he thinks that the Commons should be run like a business.

7. The end result is bloated administrations and weakened academics

Education is NOT business, and given what chuckleheads many of the "great business minds" are (hello, Donald Trump!), they really should not be engaged in deciding education.

9. Yep.

This is exactly the right question to be asking, in so many areas of our lives. It's time to start thinking beyond the corporate propaganda that we are steeped in from birth. Maybe, just maybe, there are more important and meaningful goals to structure a society around than profit.

10. Businesses exist to make a profit, but government & education

(unless you are a for-profit post-secondary institution) do NOT exist to make a profit.

11. Actually, there is a very large amount of for-profit education

There are lots of courses offered in IT, especially those to prepare students to take certification tests on Microsoft, Cisco and other systems. There are courses on IT security offered to prepare for security cert tests. Most business to business sales of any technological systems include training options for the buyer's staff provided by the seller's training organization. There are any number of managerial and other administrative specialty development courses.

15. There's a line between education and training

English lit is education

Programming language X: Level 1 is training

16. Programming language X: Level 1 is an introductory college course

Education in the niceties of transactional processing in databases geographically distributed over multiple data centers for disaster recovery and business continuity purposes is the kind of education that goes on in a corporate setting.

They expect you to know programming language X: level 1 before you are hired.

As for English Lit? Once you are out of college, nobody cares.

19. Yes and No

There are various programs that run the gamut. Community colleges offering certificate programs, training mills, online training, and dedicated training such as .NET or Java curriculum. Many of these are very training centric without any real educational merit.
