Rep. Lisa Brown: Silenced on the House floor for using correct body terms

Thursday was an important day at the Michigan Capitol. Many big decisions were being made, and my constituents sent me to be their voice at the Capitol. That is why I am shocked that Republican leadership of the Michigan House of Representatives told me that I wouldn't be allowed to speak on the House floor that day.

So why was I silenced? On Wednesday I spoke against a sweeping new anti-choice bill. This bill attempts to over-regulate women's health clinics to the point that many could no longer offer abortions. Among other things, the plan would require doctors to make funeral arrangements for fetal remains after miscarriages.

In my comments on the House floor, I used a word that Speaker Jase Bolger and floor leader Jim Stamas are clearly offended by. I used the word "vagina."

I used that word because we were debating a women's health issue. Vagina, by the way, is the correct medical name of a part of women's anatomy lawmakers want to regulate. My statements were within the rules of the House and were clearly appropriate in relation to the bill we were discussing.

One of my counterparts, Rep. Mike Callton, R-Nashville, said "vagina" is such a disturbing word that he would never deign to use it in the presence of women or "mixed company." This, from a man who earned a bachelor's degree in biology.

Isn't that something?

1. What's so scary about Vaginas? Vaginas have been very good to me.

I'm in favor of keeping them happy, healthy, and free to choose.

3. I saw a "mildly offensive" bumpersticker a while back that said,,, wait for it,,,

"I am a vaginatarian"

Take that as you will. It was quite humorous to me - but my passenger (a woman) seemed a bit put off.

4. This, from a man who earned a bachelor's degree in biology.

But, to be fair at Liberty University they refer to the vagina as a hooha.

6. A requirement to make funeral arrangements for miscarriages??

FYI, I have a dear friend who lost her baby a couple years ago and had a wonderful funeral. That was HER choice. But I've also known women who have had miscarriages who had no desire to have a funeral.

It should be up to the family, not mandated by law.

8. Choice - it seems that those

on the right can not accept a woman making a choice about anything.

You are 110% correct a funeral should be left to the family to decided on not some politicians who are offended by women having vaginas.

7. How do they intend to get rid of dead fetuses in the womb?

Let them rot? Infuse into the woman? Make it cost thousands, in addition to the thousands it costs for a high risk abortion? So that poor women have no recourse? Fucking ghouls.
