Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsYou know what really pisses me off about Trump threatening to sue over the Melania stories?
The unadulterated hypocrisy of it all. This is a man who accused a rival's dad of helping kill JFK, who slandered Elizabeth Warren and raised questions about her heritage, who claims Obama founded ISIS and keeps calling Hillary "Crooked Hillary." This is the same guy who prefaces half his comments with "many people are saying." Yet, the moment media outlets start saying anything about his wife, even outlets that make it clear they are simply reporting on an investigation done by the Daily Mail, they threaten to sue. It's just more evidence that Trump and his family think they are better than the rest of us.
I'll freely admit that I write for one of the outlets that Trump threatened to sue. We immediately took down the story and published a retraction simply because Trump has the money to sue us out of existence even if we could win the suit. I'm not even mad over that so much as worried about the chilling effect. If, Gods help us, Trump manages to become POTUS then I worry he will try to make it very difficult to criticize him.
Also, I'll now be donating and volunteering for Clinton's campaign because, despite strong support for Sanders, she has proven she is a responsible, intelligent adult who believes in the First Amendment. I can't say the same about Trump. Plus, I legitimately do think Clinton will be a strong progressive if we can get her a Congress that will pass anything. I can't wait to see that smug smirk wiped off Former Speaker Paul Ryan's face. Any chance of a Dem taking his spot this year?
Sorry this OP kind of devolved into a rant about the GOP in general, but they just suck so much.

(37,999 posts)The Guardian reported late on Monday night that Melania Trumps lawyers have sent threatening letters and are considering filing lawsuits against a variety of media organizations including the Daily Mail, Politico and the Week for reporting on rumors of Melania Trumps past, including her alleged immigration status when she came to the United States.
This is the quintessential example of the disturbing precedent Peter Thiel has just set by creating a blueprint for billionaires to destroy news organizations they do not like. He has shown that all they need is a little persistence. And in a media landscape that is increasingly dominated by the rich and powerful, that should give even Gawkers most ardent critics pause...

No matter who they threaten to sue, this story is just going to keep getting bigger.

(1,307 posts)will look into the escort story more. They could have a Streisand Effect on their hands

The escort story has been around more than a decade before Trump ran for president. Paolo Zampolli's agency has also long been rumored to be sketchy. People who worked for a mail order brides site said Melania was on their site before meeting Trump. Melania sure didn't make a living modeling - nearly all of the work you see of hers was done after she became Trump's girlfriend.
They're probably something to this story.
