Mitt Romney: We donít need more cops, firefighters or teachers

Mitt Romney: We donít need more cops, firefighters or teachers

By Greg Sargent

When Republicans attack public workers, they often take care to exempt cops and firefighters, because they are culturally sympathetic figures, and muddle the message that government workers are parasites who are destroying the economic conditions of ordinary Americans.

But today Mitt Romney got a good deal more specific, claiming we do not need to hire more cops or firefighters specifically, which would, he said, cut against the interests of the American people. He also specificallly named teachers.

Romney made the comments in response to Obamaís presser today, at which the president claimed the ďprivate sector is doing fine.Ē Per CNN:

Romney said of Obama, ďhe wants another stimulus, he wants to hire more government workers. He says we need more fireman, more policeman, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. Itís time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.Ē

<...>

One of the components of the American Jobs Act that Obama continues to demand that Republicans pass would invest $35 billion in federal funds to keep cops, firefighters, and teachers on the job. Republicans, Romney included, oppose this plan. Central to their argument against this type of investment is to keep the focus on public sector workers as a class, arguing that they are bilking the taxpayer and are to blame for the economic plight of struggling Americans. As Romney recently put it: ďWe have 145,000 more government workers under this president. Letís send them home and put you back to work.Ē

At the same time, however, Romney takes care to show great sympathy with first responders. As Jonathan Chait has noted, Romney has spoken movingly of the financial plight of firefighters under Obama, even though they belong to the parasitic class that he is trying to scapegoate for the economic misery of other Americans...Or, to put it another way: #WedgeFail!

1. Why pay government workers when you can impersonate them for free?

9. It's also so amazing to me to watch the

the rhetorical switcheroo happen--Mitt being called "out of touch" all the time
now slings the description at President Obama. Like Dr. Maddow
said, this stuff is fascinating. However I'd be more fascinated by all of this shit
if I wasn't so damned terrified!

7. Number of fires, deaths, and property loss is slowly declining

So the number of firefighters needed should be approximately constant.

People are probably moving from areas with paid forces to areas with volunteer firefighting as well, so maybe a slight decline in paid firefighters is in order.

8. The 1% live in gated communities

with their own heavily armed rent-a-cops and their money is safe in the Caymans. Their house is on fire? Oh well, we will just head to our third home in the Maldives while it is rebuilt.

10. The 1% generally don't live in gated communities

they don't need to. The live in towns like New Canaan, CT or La Jolla CA where there will never be police or fire department cutbacks. It's not really the 1% who live in gated communities at all. that's a myth.
