Several high school seniors in Texas won’t be having such a high old time for graduation this year, and it’s all their own damn fault. 17-year-old Ryan Westbrook, 18-year-old Ethan Sigmund, 18-year-old Christian Joeckel, 17-year-old Hayden Honoloka and 18-year-old Cameron Bodenstab will now be spending their remaining high school days facing charges for a racist crime. The teens allegedly spray painted “whites only” near a water fountain on their rival’s campus, Martin High School. They claim it was a “senior prank.”

In addition to the “whites only” vandalism, the boys also spray painted “trans only” on a men’s restroom, along with “payback for the parking lot.” The charges include their spreading hatred based upon race and sexual orientation. Arlington police Lt. Christopher Cook says of the situation:

“They’re pretty remorseful. I don’t think that they gave a lot of thought into the ramifications. Unfortunately you’re held accountable and there’s consequences when you engage in this behavior.”

1. What was a casual lark for these kids hurt others

who bear great burdens just to live in dignity in this country.

It's too bad the five boys didn't decide to meet in the library to read John Irving's A Prayer for Owen Meany, Maya Angelou's Still I Rise, John Kennedy's Inaugural Address, and Barry Lopez's Of Wolves and Men. Just for starters. And then agree to visit a nursing home and read the same texts to residents there to cheer the difficult days nursing home residents spend in significant loneliness.

How many of the five have younger sisters or brothers? Or younger cousins? Would they not have preferred to have left a better example of citizenship, a higher record of personal conduct rather than intemperate and crude vandalism on school property?

Graduation should be withheld until the five of them grow up.

2. That wasn't a 'senior prank'. A senior prank is spraying in shaving cream your school's name

on the walls of your rival's school building. Easy to clean up; nobody gets hurt.

This was a hate crime.
