After All He's Said and Done, How Does Ted Cruz Return To The Senate?

WASHINGTON — With his concession speech behind him and his multimillion-dollar presidential campaign already winding down, Ted Cruz will soon return to the U.S. Capitol and the job he was working so hard to transcend: rank-and-file senator.

It will likely be a striking re-entry. At times in recent months, Cruz appeared on track to land the nomination. But soon his campaign apparatus will fade away, as will the buses and traveling press corps. And come next week, he will be back to being just one of one hundred.

And when he returns to the Senate with two and a half years left in his freshman term, he will enter hostile territory. There is no way around it: The actions he took over the course of his presidential campaign only further frayed Cruz's strained relationships with colleagues.

This is the chamber where Cruz made a national name for himself by orchestrating a campaign to shut down the government, a campaign that many of his colleagues pleaded with him to abort. This is the chamber where Cruz once called his party's highest-ranking member, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a liar on the Senate floor. And this is the chamber where Cruz has an unusually disconnected relationship with his home state's other senator, John Cornyn, who said just last week that Cruz "came here to run for president."

Most people would care about that, especially someone in elective office! He is one strange guy. I wonder if even his wife likes him? Or Carly Fiorina, for that matter?

But Cruz burned every bridge he had in the Senate. With no friends or allies among his fellow Senators he will get nothing done for Texas.

I predict at age 45, his political life is finished.

There are some in Congress that we see all the time - Louie Gohmert comes to mind - that you just can't imagine anybody voting for. Though I should talk, my current congresswoman is someone I could never vote for - a protégée of Paul Ryan. We used to have Kirsten Gillibrand here in NY-20.

And then Cruz stabbed him in the back on the Senate floor over a prison reform bill Lee was sponsoring.

Yet Lee would eventually join Lindsey Graham as the only two Senators to endorse Cruz for president.

...for POTUS in 4 years. He has an assured job for the next 2 1/2 years, and given the few demands on the time and energy of GOP Senators, he has plenty of time to brood over the wrongs done to him and plot his comeback and/or revenge.

Keep an eye out. I won't believe he's really out of our hair unless he fails to run for POTUS in 2020.

Meh, cockroaches are disgusting. I grew up in Hawai'i, where you just cannot get rid of them. My body must still be trying to cast off the effects of Raid.

What kills them deader than dead is a flip-flop, aka rubbah slippah. I got good at that, but only works one on one.

1. Return to the Senate and be a lonely back-bencher as he was before he ran and work on a bruising re-election campaign in 2018.

2. Resign and do whatever.

Unless the country really goes off the rails, I do not see any 2020 meaningful presidential opportunity for him.
