Don't look now but John Lehman Just Declared Victory In WI State Senate Giving Dems the Majority

John Lehman declared victory at 12:53 am, dedicating the victory to all the hard work and hours of service from the volunteers who led the recall efforts in the 21st Senate District.

12:50 am: With all City of Racine locations reporting, Lehman retained his lead 31,410 to 31.092, according to numbers tallied by Patch using figures from the county and the City of Racine.

The legislature's in recess until January. Wisconsin's Republicans got to gerrymander the districts in 2010, many are now set to turn Repub in November.

Plus, it will take some wind out of the "WI rejects DEMS" type arguments.

As I posted on another thread, I have a bad habit of trying to make the best of a sucky situation as a way of dealing with it, but... if Walker had been kicked out of office, 1) there wouldn't have been the same glaring argument against big money in politics (i.e., if he'd been defeated despite an 8:1 spending ratio), and 2) Democrats control the Senate, so SUCK IT, WALKER, and 3) when he's indicted, it will have huge reverberations in the context of his having kept his office with the help of big donors, and of course of his being a sitting governor rather than a sad man who had left politics involuntarily anyway. So while it sucks in a big way that he won, in the big picture it might be okay after all.

Their regular session is already over, so this only helps with a special session.

Also, the Dems are up for reelection in November, so they have to hold onto every seat. Again.

The Senate is out of session and will not be back until after the next election when the Republicans will have a chance to take back the majority with new district boundaries having been drawn by the Republicans. Walker could call them back in a special session but that won't happen.

34. So yesterday WASN'T a complete waste

Jun 2012

Around lunchtime, I got an e-mail to that effect from a Mark Miller identifying himself as the new Wisconsin Senate Majority leader:

...Starting today, Senate Democrats will be a strong check on Scott Walker's power. If Walker tries to pass extreme policies that bust unions, hurt women, or attack middle-class families, we will have one word for him: No. We will demand laws that benefit the middle class and start repairing our state.

From the bottom of my heart, I want to say thank you...your efforts helped us achieve victory and restore balance in our state. I look forward to working as partners with bold progressive activists in the days, months, and years ahead...

So yesterday WASN'T a total waste -- unless the WI Senate is infested with DINOs. So get your chins up off the floor, start in on turning Walker into John Doe, and CUE THE VONAGE THEME!

Let's not forget the setbacks(and do try to learn from them as well!), but let us celebrate the good news and not lose sight of the fact that Obama still has a good chance for victory in November.....while, of course, being ever the more vigilant in case of GOP dirty tricks.
