I'm sure this NRA ad falsely claiming Barrett voted to ban deer hunting rifles didn't help him.

http://www.politifact.com/wisconsin/statements/2012/may/29/national-rifle-association/wisconsin-recall-nra-says-dem-challenger-tom-barre/

In a radio ad that began airing in May 2012, two men talk about Barrett. Here’s part of the conversation:

Man 1: "Well, Barrett voted to ban 15 different kinds of guns, even a lot of common deer rifles."

Man 2: "I love my deer rifle. Barrett voted to ban ‘em?"

Man 1: "Yeah."

Wisconsin's gun deer hunting season is months away, but you can bet the hundreds of thousands of hunters in the Badger State took notice of the NRA's claim.

He described how the Democratic Speaker came to him in '94 and basically begged him not to make the AWB a part of the '94 crime bill, on the grounds that it was going to get Democrats killed at the polls. Clinton basically admitted in the book that he should have listened and that it might have mitigated a lot of the 1994 midterms if he had.

that there were 2 key issues in Al Gore's run which if played differently would have sealed a win. His support of global/regional trade agreements and support of the AWB and gun control in general.

Right after he finishes busting BP and all those corrupt Wall Street CEOs.

Or not. I'm easy. I'm sure that whatever Obama decides to do or not do, it will result in DEM victory.

I was responding to Hoyt's comment that "Anyone that hung up on guns ain't likely gonna vote for a Dem". Folks living in rural areas where people do a lot of hunting care about their guns - whether they are Democrats, Independents, or Republicans. The NRA lying about a candidate's voting record on guns could effect any of those people's votes.

that is one of the huge ironies of the gun control movement - their biggest victory was the act that eventually destroyed gun control as a viable political movement in America.

It doesn't mater if you call them sporting rifles, semiauto rifles, sport utility rifles, assault weapons, or assault rifles...if he voted to ban those items, invariably he voted to ban some people's deer & hog rirles. It doesn't matter what kind of politically charged/scary name you label these guns with. They are very popular to hunt with... regardless of their appearance.

IMO, this is a perfectly acceptable hunting gun (semiauto .308 winchester) that Barrett had voted to ban:

“Did you know yesterday that Texas adopted a law allowing you to shoot a deer with a silencer?

"How is this even a problem? Do you need to take out deer henchmen before they can warn the deer evil genius in his lair?

"It’s a deer, you have a gun, it doesn’t even have hands. How much more of an edge do you need?

"Right now Congress is considering a bill that would forbid the EPA from regulating the lead in bullets. Not that the EPA is regulating lead in bullets, but it might. And imagine what it could do if it linked up with the deer.

"Hunters leave three thousand tons of lead bullets in America’s forests every year, which poisons 20 million birds, birds that will never know the joy of being blown to pieces by a miserable chinless fuckface.

"Why can’t we even pass a rule against poison bullets?

"This is a cautionary tale about what happens when the Democrats completely lay down on an issue and let the right get whatever they want: you get insanity.”

Like, in time to have done some good?

AK-47 makes a poor hunting rifle, anyway. I'd take a Remington 700 over that, any day, for deer.
