fiber-to-the-node (FTTN) ADSL2 from Frontier Communications for $30 a month. I live out in a rural area, though I may switch as the cable is getting way better in just the past year.

I'm rural and on satellite here's the result 15.49/2.93, and for that I pay $63 per month for 10 GB. Too bad I don't live in a developed country that has real health care and universal high speed internet.

You have a lovely state. If we had the wherewithal we would live in our dream house in Amenia, NY. That would put us in easy driving distance to the relatives in the Litchfield Hills. This would be near Troutbeck on the Webatuck river (creek??).

since not so familiar with this stuff that since I just have one AT&T line and there are several devices connected then this laptop would show relatively slow speeds because of sharing the bandwidth? Two smart TV's two laptops, and PS3...

What do those numbers actually mean?

I do know I stream Netflix and various other things and have no problem.

Although, I'm a bit puzzled that although I live in Santa Fe, it seemed to be testing me as if I were in Albuquerque, and the name of my internet provider wasn't one of the ones listed.

Every 8 Megabits is a Megabyte, so 13.58 Mbps is 1.7 Megabytes per second for download.

As for testing, it finds the nearest server and does a test from that server, which is hosted by some provider.

Several years ago, looking to reduce my internet bill, I recall a discussion with the rep of my ISP, and a discussion of some sort about the speed. I do recall making a reduction in the download speed, and the rep assuring me that the lower speed would work just fine for on-line streaming, and he was right. Again, the numbers tend to be meaningless to me, so I appreciate someone who can explain such things.

768 Kbps when it's working.

I'm going to be getting 3 Mbps service for 145 per month. Yes, $145. That's what you call the rural digital divide. Phone company won't do shit. Cable won't do shit. And data limits on wifi modems screw you. What's worse is that no p d at all seems to give s shit.

GOP Senators Say People Don't Need 25 Mbps Broadband

Six Republican senators are pushing back against Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler's proposed finding that broadband still isn't being deployed in a "reasonable and timely fashion."

The lawmakers say Wheeler's conclusion hinges on the FCC's decision last year to redefine broadband as speeds of at least 25 Mbps downstream and 3 Mbps upstream. Ten percent of the overall U.S. population lacks access to connections at those speeds, as does 39% of the rural population.

The senators argue in a Jan. 21 letter to Wheeler that there is no reason why people need 25 Mbps connections. "We are concerned that this arbitrary 25/3 Mbps benchmark fails to accurately capture what most Americans consider broadband," Sens. Steve Daines (Montana), Roger Wicker (Mississippi), Roy Blunt (Missouri), Deb Fischer (Nebraska), Ron Johnson (Wisconsin) and Cory Gardner (Colorado) write.

Google fiber was supposed to come to my neighborhood last summer but they ran into problems.
Most of the buried utility lines in my part of town were nowhere near where the developer plans filed with they city said they were.
Between repairing damaged lines-phone, electric, and cable, they're supposed to be hooking up sometime in the next month.

Dislike Comcast and would dump it if I had any other choice of internet provider. Very costly and I think over priced because there is near no competition for their service at my location. Hoping for Google but its going to be a long wait. Had Clearwire for several years and it was slow with many outages but the cost was low . At least Comcast stays on with few interruptions in service, only improved within the last 12 months
