SF drag queens react to homeless sweeps with food and clothes
Some dozen San Francisco drag queens came together Tuesday afternoon to distribute food, clothing, and other essentials to the homeless under the 101 freeway near Harrison and 13th, laying out dozens of items outside the SoMa Streatfood Park and serving up hot meals they cooked that morning.
Some of us got together and thought Hey, lets just do something, said Simone, one of the drag queens involved. Were hoping that this is something that keeps going.
More than 100 tents have sprung up on the Mission-SoMa border in the last few weeks, and organizers said they were reacting to news stories that the citys downtown was being swept clean of the homeless in advance of the Super Bowl.
I am super angry at the Super Bowl pushing the homeless where they have nowhere to go, said Jolene, a drag queen whose day job is in tech and said her industry is partly responsible for the homelessness issue in the city.
Were spending millions of dollars on what we feel is a very frivolous sporting event, said Piranha, one of the main organizers of the event in reference to the $5 million the city is spending on the game.

(20,172 posts)prior to the Superbowl in 2004. Any single female who was stopped for anything and everything got thrown in jail for the weekend. I was taken to jail over an unpaid traffic ticket. Cuffs and everything. I was 47 at the time.
I met another woman, 50+, in the holding cell who had been walking home from working the late shift. Someone pulled up alongside her and offered her a ride. She decided they looked "safe" so she accepted their offer. When she got in the car they slapped cuffs on her and took her in for prositution. The charges were dropped after she spent Friday night through Sunday in jail.
The holding cell was full of women who were brought in TO JAIL for all sorts of small offenses. Everyone was let out and their charges were either dismissed outright or in my case my ticket was taken care of for time served. But they got all us hoes off the street!

(20,172 posts)He cuffed me behind my back and put me in the back seat. I have arthritis in my shoulders and asked if he could cuff me in front. He refused. I asked him to buckle my seat belt and he refused that too. To top it off, my mother had just died days before, so I was just sobbing. I had never been arrested (and haven't been since). I'm just a fat old bookkeeper. But apparently there was a "female quota" for the weekend. Any unaccompanied female was a potential whore. Lock 'em up!
