Do DUers now understand why they had to destroy ACORN

first - the plan from day one was to steal the election.
At least Dems are finally learning not to defer to these ReTHUGs.
Charge every governor who is trying to steal the November elections.

Jun 2012

(The path to that point was marked with assassinations, scandals and scare tactics.)

The second was buying the press.

The third was getting Clinton to pass a law permitting big corporations to buy a stranglehold on the most influential media.

The fourth was strengthening the DLC to the point that the Democratic Party is simply the party of expediency -- unrepresentative of and unattractive to working people.

The fifth -- destroying ACORN and other voting rights efforts.

The sixth -- Citizens United.

The seventh will be gradually trying to limit voting rights to people who have money and own property.

At which point, they now figure that they will have total control -- which they probably will.

But over what? A divided, demeaned, angry population living in a polluted, overpopulated, filthy environment?

"Watch out what you ask for. You might get it." That's my warning to these crazy right-wingers. I'm not threatening. I'm predicting.

If you are new to DU or if you have swallowed the DLC bait, you will think I am a conspiracy theorist.

No. I am not.

I just remember Harry Truman and all that has happened since him. There is a historical trajectory here. It is easy to plot it on a timeline. Begin with post-WWII and the Cold War hysteria (and I am not saying that there was no danger, but rather that it was exaggerated and used to achieve politically extreme ends) and plot the pivotal events to the present.

...I believe you folks will have another civil or revolutionary war. All other options will have been taken from you & the 'underclasses' will believe they have nothing left to lose.

Don't let it get to that point, please.

It is much more difficult to swallow why Democrats helped them to do it, we cannot pretend they had the votes otherwise.

In reality, it was our party that killed ACORN because the opposition didn't have the capability. There was no TeaPubliKlan House and they had a generational low in the Senate.

The Democratic Party leadership abandoned ACORN, and threw them to the wolves as fast as they could.

After the stolen election of 2000,
and the "questionable" election of 2004,
one would think that Election Security, Transparency, Accountability, and Voter's Rights
would be a burning HOT Issue with the Democratic Party.
Instead, all we get is silence and MORE opaque, privately owned voting machines than ever,
and an INCREASE of voters denied access to The Polls.

The few voices pointing out The Problem can ONLY be found in the Fringe Left "Hoo-Hoo" Wing of the Democratic Party, like Dennis Kucinich,
and "they" are being steadily eliminated from the Democratic Party.

You will know them by their WORKS,
not by their excuses.

Here on DU eg, people saw through the O'Keefe lies and lots of information was posted right here, before that vote came up in Congress. Also, SOME Democrats, 75 of them I believe, voted against Daryl Issa's (that alone should have been enough, that it was Issa V ACORN) bill to defund them.

Add to that they were told by members of their own party that such a vote was a 'Bill of Attainder' later ruled on I believe in court.

I do not believe they are more stupid than the average person and average people saw through the lies. So either we have a supremely gullible and stupid party, or they were complicit. But why? ACORN helped Democrats. That is the part I never understood.

and young people and drawing histrionic fire from the extreme Right. But now, Project Vote is part of the well-funded Obama 2012 Campaign!

Google +"Project Vote" (at http://www.google.com/search?q=%2B%22voter+registration%22++%2B%22project+vote%22+2008+2012&hl=en&ct=clnk ) and you'll get well over 200,000 "hits".

The Project Vote homepage is at http://projectvote.org/ .

Many right-wing websites are exercised because Obama 2012-run Project Vote has exactly the same name as a shoestring operation allegedly closely linked to Acorn in 2008! But now it's an arm of the Obama Presidential campaign (see http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0811/62049.html )

The most comprehensive right-wing critique of Project Vote I found in my brief Google is so over-the-top racist it is HILARIOUS! See it at http://www.thoughtsfromaconservativemom.com/2012/01/justice-department-partners-with-acorns-project-vote-for-voter-registration-drives/

BTW, the Wikipedia article on ACORN details four separate investigations, including one by the GAO, that cleared Acorn of all criminal allegations against it. Yet defunding still led to Acorn's demise in 2010. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_Community_Organizations_for_Reform_Now

When my husband and I were watching the 08 returns--we noticed in Texas, that more people voted for Barack
Obama than there were registered Republicans in that state.

Think about that for a minute.

Isn't it staggering? And these types of numbers happened in many states--in so many counties and precincts.

Obama and the excitement for his candidacy--sparked an avalanche of Democratic registrations. Our side
secured so many new registered Democratic voters. Conversely, interest for McCain was lukewarm at
best, and the Republican base hated McCain. Registration numbers on the Republican side did not see the
surge that the Democrats did.

The Republicans knew back then that these new Democratic registrations would mean trouble for 2012. They
destroyed ACORN pretty quickly.

So yeah. The Republicans had to launch their dirty-tricks campaign. We haven't seen the worst of it, and they're
going to be alleging all sorts of fraud and fake crises to create barriers to voting. It will be sickening.
