Does anyone know how to embed a tweet on DU? (Original Post) FourScore Dec 2015 OP
Turn it into a picture and post that. Jesus Malverde Dec 2015 #1
I would take a screen shot and post the pic (crop it if you need to) darkangel218 Dec 2015 #2

On a mac command shift 4 will allow you to select a screen area and make a picture. Not sure on a PC. DU needs some improvements, to be able to embed tweets.

Also it will only embed for people that don't have social media tabs hidden in their account preferences. But the basic steps are as follows:

  • copy the embed code for the tweet
  • throw away the <script> section
  • replace the < and > characters with &lsqb; and ]
  • change the anchor tags to &lsqb;link:] format
  • cross your fingers

If you want a more detailed explanation, just copy the tweet embed code here and I will show the steps in more detail.

I think I got it right, but I just want to make sure because the whole thing isn't showing up.

... when there is something embedded in the tweet (e.g. picture, video, another tweet)—that's why the last step is to cross your fingers.

Starting with the embed code...

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">New test: replace the word "Muslims" with "Jews" and then ask yourself "Do I sound like a fucking Nazi?"</p>— Jesse LaGreca (@JesseLaGreca) <a href="https://twitter.com/JesseLaGreca/status/673280186083840000">December 5, 2015</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

... throw away the <script> section...

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">New test: replace the word "Muslims" with "Jews" and then ask yourself "Do I sound like a fucking Nazi?"</p>— Jesse LaGreca (@JesseLaGreca) <a href="https://twitter.com/JesseLaGreca/status/673280186083840000">December 5, 2015</a></blockquote>

... replace < and > with &lsqb; and ]...

&lsqb;blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"]&lsqb;p lang="en" dir="ltr"]New test: replace the word "Muslims" with "Jews" and then ask yourself "Do I sound like a fucking Nazi?"&lsqb;/p]&mdash; Jesse LaGreca (@JesseLaGreca) &lsqb;a href="https://twitter.com/JesseLaGreca/status/673280186083840000"]December 5, 2015&lsqb;/a]&lsqb;/blockquote]

... and finally change the anchor (&lsqb;a href=...) tag to the &lsqb;link:] format used here...

&lsqb;blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"]&lsqb;p lang="en" dir="ltr"]New test: replace the word "Muslims" with "Jews" and then ask yourself "Do I sound like a fucking Nazi?"&lsqb;/p]&mdash; Jesse LaGreca (@JesseLaGreca) &lsqb;link:https://twitter.com/JesseLaGreca/status/673280186083840000|December 5, 2015]&lsqb;/blockquote]

I did all this except the last step. It can be found here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10027433295

When I do the last step, it highlights the date. Odd, so I just left out the last step.

I guess there's no way here on DU (except taking a pic) to get the little tweet box that you see on other websites.

It works for me. If it embeds for you (you must be in 'view_all' mode for the thread), copy the code from the last excerpt box in my previous post.

I had a typo in my last post which probably broke the address in the link—I was editing when you were replying.
