(65,616 posts)Hard to be more right about something. For that matter, when are we leaving Afghanistan? 14 years later...and what do we have to show for Americas longest war?

By the time you get all the eligible warmongers shipped out, there might not need to be any innocent lives in harms way. And eligibility age should be from 18 to 90.

(4,291 posts)Today I listened to a discussion about events and issues in the middle east -- the speakers were a former ambassador to a country in that region and his wife. When asked during the Q&A part of the program, what would they advise our government to do, they were pretty clear: stay the hell out.
The efforts to wipe out Daesh must be owned entirely by the countries in that region. Additional US or allied deployments will only bolster Daesh's recruitment efforts. We can support the legitimate governments with training and technology, but the middle eastern states must do the fighting.
They went on to say that a cultural shift is necessary. The old government model of controlling citizens/subjects will not work any more. The governments must move to influencing the people, using the social media and web platforms that Daesh has successfully manipulated to get this far.
Let the grown-ups deal with this matter; throwing our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines into battle is what got us into this situation in 2003.

(368 posts)As a 60s person, a draft is the last thing that I thought I would ever support. But a draft is just what is needed at the beginning of the next invasion. One where no one is exempt, other than certified disabled and those over a certain age. Start putting the rich kids on the front lines and see how the wealthy respond.
I've always said that " the rich start wars, and the poor fight them".
without a draft, there are no protests, no popular resistance, sadly only heroes.
