Parents upset over toddler being ‘physically bound’ at day care

A Michigan couple says their 2-year-old son was repeatedly physically bound against his will at a day care center.

Jason and Rebecca Vannest of Davison became aware of the alleged abuse when a staff member at Rainbow Child Care Center shared an image of William swaddled. This technique of wrapping a child in a blanket is commonly used on newborn babies but not toddlers.

“He was being wrapped and bound so tightly that he couldn’t move and was being forced to lie down,” Jason shared in an interview with SFGate.

The Vannests immediately pulled their son from the center and contacted the police who in turn involved Children’s Protective Services and the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office.

Investigations are now complete and WNEM-TV reports that the center has been cited yet details on specific consequences are confidential. The Vannests claim the caregiver who bound William is still working at the center and they are now sharing their story because they’re concerned about this person interacting with children

The Vannests first learned about the situation last June when a staff member at the day care said their son was struggling at nap time and a caregiver was wrapping him as tightly as possible and forcing him to lay down.

The parents were surprised because William naps easily at home and the parents asked the staff member to take a photo. “The day we saw the photo was the last day he was at the center,” Jason said.
