(10,164 posts)A certain mistrust of the powers-that-be is as American as you can ask for...as befits a nation that began as a rebelling colony. But Reagan began a marked ratcheting up of that attitude, and in a democratic society, taking that mistrust so far is pure poison. With a certain tragic irony, it's caused many people not so much to rise up and regain control of our government, but instead to give up and just assume that government is inevitably a hungry, dangerous beast that can only be improved by having less of it. It's an attitude that says "I'm bailing on the notion of making democratic rule actually work."

(14,177 posts)It was to complete the corporate take over of the United States. It worked. I am not actually sure there has ever been a time that this country was a democracy or a republic or whatever the cool kids want to call it. We have a slight chance to change that for the future though.

(33,688 posts)that were heirs to the Gilded Age Plutocrats.
The men who admired Nazi Germany as the bright shining wave of the future they planned. The ones who cooked up the Business Plot against Franklin Roosevelt. The ones who made fortunes dealing with Nazi Germany before and during the war, the ones who brought countless unreconstructed Nazis to the US and seeded them throughout the intelligence apparatus. The ones who never wanted the US to fight Hitler at all, but wanted to ally with his Germany against the Soviets.
And of their sons after them. Cough - the Koch brothers.
This has all been a-brewing since FDR's first term. A very long game was played. And they won. Nazi Germany conquered the US by stealth long after Hitler was mouldering in the grave. For the sole reason that the American oligarchy LOVED Nazi Germany.

(10,164 posts)Can we lop off the oligarchy and make this a real republic? Probably not...but I'm certainly willing to try. And yeah...we have the first candidate I actually have major enthusiasm for in, well...my entire life, really.

(1,989 posts)for all practical purposes he drove moderate Republican politicians to extinction.
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)In fact I don't think it was necessarily a bad thing he drove moderate Republicans to extinction. Look at what they have been left with. They have no viable Presidential candidates. Democrats are starting to fight back and win and they are making progress in some red areas. Both parties are losing people, but Republicans are losing support faster. Independents are the largest group right about now and growing, they are becoming more liberal. People are waking up to the insanity that is the GOP. But, working people are still demonized that is the worst thing he did. Demonizing unions and destroying the middle class and starting the process of gutting the safety net by demonizing the poor.

(1,241 posts)Limbaugh could give a rats ass what ANYONE thinks of him. His idiot ditto heads actually think he is one of them. When in all reality he wouldn't piss on one if they were on fire. He has 4 or 5 people that he calls friend that are there to kiss his ass. He pushes the first amendment to the nuts for his ratings. When he has the big one, I hope it's live on air.

(6,261 posts)I was working at home and a big fan of the Owen Span show (RIP) when he took over that time slot in 1988. He was mildly amusing with his Gorbasms and his Feminazis and his "I AM equal time", but it was clear early on that he was just a buffoon and a clown.
In fact, I recall him being interviewed shortly after and saying that it was all just an act and that he said things just to get a reaction and didn't really believe any of it.
I never would have believed he was going to be a national phenomenon or that he would apparently start to believe his own drivel.
