Twenty five years ago today
Oct. 3, 1990, in The Star: The Confederate battle flag that flies atop Alabama’s Capitol dome was stolen early today and a person claiming credit for the theft declared in a phone call “racism must fall.” The flag was hauled down in pre-dawn hours from its place below the American flag and the Alabama state flag. According to a building superintendent, one or more intruders broke the lock on the metal hatch that leads to the walkway around the dome, then apparently hauled down the Confederate flag by pulling its rope.
