Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHave you all heard about Dallas County, Texas today? Our new DA has been missing since the beginning
Of August. Yesterday around 4pm the citizens of Dallas received her official statement. After only being on the job since January she is now going to take 4 more weeks off for depression!
I started calling every office I could find this morning. The DA's office said to call the State Board, they said file your complaint online or in writing.
Mayor's office, not available, City Council all day.
Democratic Party HQ, voice mail.
State Atty General's office most fun. Call the FBI. After I was admonished for being naive, "Everone lies, especially to gain office." Oh right, silly me!!
That would be the office of PAXTON. Indicted for fraud!!
Texas, is a mess!
The DA is Susan Hawk. Just google. Having trouble with cut and paste links this am.
Be sure to catch opinion piece from Jim Schutze at Dallas Observer.
What are we supposed to do?
This person lied from the very beginning of her campaign. It was only confessed after her election that she spent the first weeks after announcing her campaign for DA of Dallas County that she spent weeks in rehab while others campaigned for her.
Dallas is sick, but well, we've all known that for quite sometime now!
So wisest ones at DU, any suggestions?
I am not going to be able to respond for next several hrs to any suggestions anyone may have.
Tks DU, you all are the best!

(34,845 posts)First thing I'd do is find out where she is and make sure she's all right. Depression is nothing to sneeze at.

(3,724 posts)If she's sick, whether it's depression or something else, she needs treatment. In the meantime, is someone running the DA office? An ADA, perhaps? Are criminals being prosecuted, or has anarchy taken over the streets? Not sure what you're getting at here...

(5,128 posts)And yes, office of DA is functioning. No anarchy yet.

(3,724 posts)If she's a county employee, she probably has some benefits that address sick leave, etc. Let it play out through normal channels.

(6,324 posts)That pretty fucking disgusting.
No wonder we still have so many stigmas attached to people seeking mental health treatment.
Would you be acting this way if she was taking leave for cancer treatments? For pregnancy? Any other medical issue?
But no, we will act like seeking mental health treatment is a fraud or a flaw one must be punished for.
I don't care what party she is from, I haven't even looked. It doesn't matter. Attacking someone and trying to cost them their job, any job, because they are seeking mental health treatment is JUST PLAIN WRONG.
And doing it to a public figure just serves to keep the stigmas and bigotry about people seeking mental health treatment alive and well.
You ask for suggestions- knock that shit off and do some serious reflection about how fucked up what your doing is and what a fucked up message it sends to anyone else struggling with mental illness. That is my suggestion.

Maybe I don't see the big problem. If the DA is not at work, how are you affected? How are the people of Dallas county affected? There are assistant DAs to pick up most of the immediate tasks.
Best wishes to your DA and those who care for her.

(3,724 posts)If the OP had done just exactly what you did, he might not have been "piled on". From what he posted, it appeared that he was overly, really overly, concerned about someone's medical (read: mental health) condition. And that seemed like a pretty shitty attitude.
