4. When we encountered them in 2001

It was a hot, muggy July day in the Midwest. On the theory that bigotry is thirsty work, we bought them cold drinks from street vendors, and offered them to our friends from Westboro. We were greeted with hostility and suspicion, but with amity and unrelenting hospitality, we eventually gave them the sodas, teas and water.

The folks from Westboro welcome hostility. They welcome brickbats and insults and hollering. Their entire understanding of the gospel is that when they are opposed, they are following God's plan. All that talk about mutuality, love, caring for humanity and so forth is just eyewash to them. But when their brandished swords are met with soft answers and genial responses, it really discombobulates them.

They skedaddled pretty quickly when we weren't giving them what they wanted. But they took the cold drinks, and haven't come back.

Their signs alone do enough damage to themselves. Protesting them seems rather redundant, IMO.

Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love; this is the eternal rule.
