Half of Blacks Say Police Have Treated Them Unfairly

A majority of blacks in the United States — more than 3 out of 5 — say they or a family member have personal experience with being treated unfairly by the police, and their race is the reason why.

This information, from a survey conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, comes as the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, Missouri, approaches its first anniversary and the nation continues to grapple with police-related deaths of black Americans.

African-Americans said they felt especially targeted by the police. Half of black respondents, including 6 in 10 black men, said they personally had been treated unfairly by police because of their race, compared to 3 percent of whites. Another 15 percent said they knew of a family member who had been treated unfairly by the police because of their race.

White Americans who live in more diverse communities — those where census data show at least 25 percent of the population is non-white — were more likely than other whites to say police in their communities sometimes treat minorities more roughly, 58 percent to 42 percent. And they're more likely to see the police as too quick to use deadly force, 42 percent to 29 percent.

I'm really curious as to what correlations tie those who say they haven't been together. Geography? Age? Gender? Socioeconomics?

I don't think People know how difficult arriving to that conclusion (i.e., racially disparate treatment) is to reach ... it is, generally, arrived at, only, after all other reasonable conclusions have been exhausted.

Have the police ever treated you unfairly for any reason, including race?

Police treat people unfairly because they are young, poor, driving an old car, lost, out-of-towners or any number of reasons.

The little caveat there of "race is the reason why" creates a one-sided perception that police only mistreat PoCs and the question appears designed to keep white people and black people at odds.

How does Black people speaking on their being mistreated "keep(ing) white people and black people at odds."

The only way I can see that is when white people don't care to hear it, as I have never seen a Black person making that argument.

Food for future thought.

It often seems as if the game you are playing has little to do with dealing with racism or improving race relations in the USA.

The article implies that cops only mistreat black people and mainly because of race. The real takeaway, at least for those without a hidden agenda, is that when cops mistreat black people, PoC feel the cops are doing so because of race.

The omission of a question regarding whether cops unfairly treated people in general exposes a bias to continue the long-practiced policy of keeping poor white people and black people at odds with each other in order to maintain discord and increase the wealth and control of the already powerful.

It is a covert, overt and hideous effort I am absolutely convinced Hillary Clinton, and others who pretend to speak for black folks, supports.

No ... the story is reporting the results of a continuing yearly survey observing and measuring the racial world we live in. That same survey queries white people on the same topic, asking the same question.

I stopped believing you long ago. Your online persona is slick, but that's about it.

But for those folks who still think you are what you say you are, I offer this rebuttal.

"That is delusional. "

1SBM claims it is "delusional" that I could think the powerful elite actively try to keep poorer folks fighting each other rather than allowing the numerically superior poor folks to unite to fight the powerful elite.

Let me repeat. He says it is delusional that the high class people would protect their wealth and power by keeping poor folks fighting amongst themselves.

This is exactly the game I see you playing, and exactly the reason I am unable to trust your motivation.

1SBM's blatant and obvious attempt to marginalize anyone, who notes a policy of economic suppression through the time-honored tactics of discord that has been occurring for hundreds of years in this part of the world, is exactly the criticism I have with the article in the OP.

Both are efforts to keep us fighting each other.

Are you suggesting that some cops treat black folks shabbily or worse in a coordinated attempt to keep the races from economically uniting and they are doing it at the behest of Hillary Clinton?

Thank you in advance.

I am saying that the survey and its presentation is the PTB acting in a deliberate attempt to create further strife between persons of color and poor white folks. Cops mistreating black people or white people is more systemic this far down the line than coordinated.

I am further saying that there are persons who ostensibly claim they support persons of color, poor whites or both groups, but in reality sow deliberate strife to keep the underclass in this culture fighting each other rather than forcing the powerful to stop screwing us over. Some of those folks are on DU. Finally, I am saying that Hillary Clinton, as evidenced by the way she is stealing the BLM movement to service her election campaign, the money she receives from the banking industry, her support of the TPP as well as other behavior on her part, supports the effort to keep poor people fighting each other.

Unless a person is in total distress like an obviously homeless person a cop can't divine a person's social class by looking at him or her and given that fact it seems black folks are much more likely to be treated shabbily than non-blacks.

17. Not what I observe
Wed Aug 5, 2015, 01:42 PM

The career of police officer attracts many people who were/are bullies.

I've seen it in south Texas where cops mistreat poor white and poor Hispanic people. I've seen it in Maine where cops mistreat poor white people.

Cops mistreat people if they perceive weakness, such as if the person is young, if they are driving an old car, if they are non-white, if the people are dressed poorly, if they are from away, if they know the people come from a poor neighborhood, and many reasons.

There was a time when I could only afford a car that was 10 years or more old. Cops would pull me, a white teenager, over for little or no reason. They would yell at me, lecture me, threaten me and sometimes bring me into the station for no reason.

The idea that PoC are the only ones the cops mistreat is simply incorrect. It is probable that many-many cops mistreat PoC out of racist influences just as the article points out, but to imply that is all the cops are doing is falling in line with the narratives that keep black people and poor white people in conflict.

The ALM vs BLM is another example of the dynamic of discord in action. The BLM movement is important, but folks averse to the goals of BLM are pretending to support it while warping it and using it for their own gain. The animosity to anything other than BLM is a trumped up conflict which some people continue to push in order to create greater separation between we poorer members of society.

I do get it, unfortunately. I observe pawns promoting the practice of separation contrary to their own interests, and I see bishops actively moving to mislead the regular folks.

As far as your unfortunate criticism of my language skills (instead of having the character to actually engage in the debate), you are incorrect. The article, as I wrote, implies things. I infer things from the article as well. I suggest you do a Google search.

Confusion is very confusing to the confused.

Talking about black problems with racist policing is fine. Hell, it's necessary.

There's no need to minimize the broader problem with out of control cops.

And I've seen some rather nasty shit around that. I recall one OP complaining that another OP about a white kid being killed was an attempt to marginalize BLM (or something). And there's another OP today attempting to make hay off that same white kid's death as a means of attacking that phantom menace #AllLivesMatter.
