and it just makes me want to smile! The insufferable bastards who run Mendham Township-the hometown of our beloved governor -have managed to run their sleepy little town into the ground. That's because they have the same asinine approach to governing as their favorite son. Their police chief is suing them, their key personnel are jumping ship and-what this article doesn't say because the public doesn't know yet- they are in danger of not being able to meet payroll for the month of August! That's right folks, one of the wealthiest towns in America can't pay it's bills because the Teahadists who are running the place mismanaged their finances and spent all of their budget surplus while refusing to raise property taxes even one cent on their millionaire constituency.
It's made all the more enjoyable because the smarmy elitists who make up the Township Committee are so certain in their intellectual and governing superiority. It's much more entertaining when an idiot doesn't realize he's an idiot and carries on accordingly. Meanwhile, they are just so taken with Chris and Mary Pat being on the national stage. The butt kissing is quite unseemly. These quiet little rural towns are usually well managed and low key. Looks like the personality and governing abilities of the great bloviator have infected his adoring fellow townsfolk. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of people.
Gov. Chris Christie should hope the craziness of his home town doesnt rub off on him. Because if it does, he should kiss away his chances of moving in to the White House.
As they say, some things cant be made up or to try another cliche, truth can be a lot stranger than fiction and a lot weirder. Its like certain officials have fallen through the rabbit hole and cant get out.
And lets be clear were talking about Mendham Township. Neighbor Mendham Borough is virtual nirvana in comparison.
Take Police Chief Steven Crawford, for example. Crawford claims he has been sexually harassed by elected and appointed officials for more than three years. In his legal notice of intent to sue the township, Crawford claims inappropriate comments have been lobbed in his direction regarding his age, physique, out of office personal and family relationships, sexuality, sexual orientation, size of his genitals, morals and reputation, among other remarks.
It sounds like the chief has been bullied. It also sounds like a bunch of 5-year-olds have escaped school and are running roughshod around town.
And it also sounds like the chief may have an overactive imagination or maybe he has a skin the thickness of paper. Whatever is behind his claims, it better be legitimate because he and local officials are quickly becoming a laughing stock.
Enough for the chief.
Lets move on to the Township Committee and the sudden resignations of Township Administrator Amey Upchurch and Tax Collector and Chief Finance Officer Assistant Terris Garbarini. Theyre not saying why they decided to cut their losses but Township Committeewoman Maribeth Thomas said the work environment at town hall is toxic.
Thomas also said things have gone crazy, like a train wreck and that her feelings have been hurt because she feels shes been intentionally ostracized by Deputy Mayor Frank Cioppettini and others.
Committeeman Samuel Tolley said Cioppettini has tried to usurp too much power and that it was a sad day for Mendham Township.
On his behalf, Cioppettini said Thomas is way too thin-skinned and gets too involved in the daily operations of the government.
And your mother wears combat boots.
Why cant everybody just get along and act their ages, as the saying goes, and not their shoe sizes.

(273 posts)So Governor Christie, do you support a bailout for Mendham or will you be appointing an emergency manager to take over the town's finances and management?
Laxman
(2,419 posts)to go to New Hampshire to ask that! While you're there I would have about two dozen other questions for you to ask that the members of the press corps seem hesitant to inquire about.

(5,643 posts)I checked nj.com, and I couldn't find anything about the township not being able to meet its payroll, so I'm guessing they don't know?

(2,419 posts)by the end of the month when the quarterly property tax bills are due-but the next couple of weeks should prove to be an accounting challenge. Not the best time to be without your Town Administrator or Tax Collector.

(2,419 posts)but they are creeps. A bunch of obnoxious rich entitled republicans (sorry for the redundancy) with attitudes of superiority. They treat the people who work for them like garbage. They look down on surrounding towns. And they think they're soooo special because Christie lives in their town. Their town meetings are broadcast on the regional cable public access station. It's entertaining.

(2,419 posts)that preceded this. The chief is being sued by some of the patrolmen. There are allegations that the chief ordered his officers to harass young drivers (which any kid within a 20 mile radius of their town will corroborate) He held a press conference surrounded by members of the force to deny it. Anyone who isn't white or drives an older car is playing Russian Roulette trying to drive through the town. That article comes from the local weekly newspaper. The editor has been covering this town for years. I don't think he's blowing him off as much as he's trying to embarrass the whole lot of them. It's a collection of ......not nice people. Aside from that, I've got to think the chief didn't take this step blithely. He's got to have some corroborating evidence.

(2,419 posts)that has a "cooperative" relationship with Mendham on certain services. I've been dealing with them for a long time. It used to be a town run by a bunch of "old money" republicans who, if you could get past the blue blood attitude, weren't terrible people. Pro-environment, not too bad, if not downright progressive, on social issues. The Lowell Weicker type of republicans. (a species I now believe to be extinct) This new crew, and that includes people like Christie, will cut your throat if it would mean saving the millionaires $100 a year on their property taxes. They view the people who work for their town as "the help" . Selfish, entitled, obnoxious, greedy and wholly distasteful people to deal with. You are 100% right.
